Not sure how many of you speak Spanish but this is from a few months ago, at the start of 2025.

She's a long time DMC youtuber. This video talks about a whole bunch of stuff. She interviewed the director on X and there's a few relevant things for the current discussion. It's in Spanish but the tweets are in English if you want to read through them.

Anyway, the big points are that this was meant to be a multiple season project, that was confirmed years ago, so season 2 getting announced was a given, probably a 3rd one, too. He's planned to make this a 10 year project. Not sure where the starting line is, when he announced it or here, with the start of season one. He wants to explore a whole lot of characters that've appeared on the manga, LNs and games and each season. What we have now for S1 are in the same time frame as the DMC3 manga. The events here cover stuff that never saw the light of day from code 3: Lady. Also, he spelled canon wrong, which I've done, too, so I can't say s#!t.

He also reiterates that this is his vision for the story, not a canonical interpretation. Also says we're going to learn who trained Lady, that part is implied as game canon. Goes on to say that these designs are not their final one, Dante and Lady will have longer hair, Lady will wear something else, not this season I guess, specifically, that biker outfit from the other anime. She talks about the reaction to her outfit and how people were calling it 'for modern audiences' because she looks rather butch. She mentions that in the released concept art she looks less blocky and more feminine than the concept art so, maybe not to worry... She asked the director and he confirmed that this was an early concept art that was tweaked later on for the final product (even though looks pretty much like the final product to me).

The design also leads to concerns that there is a lot of futuristic elements with that armor and that people saw this as having too much sci-fi for a gothic horror based world. There are exceptions, like Nico's arms. There are is a mixture of modern things, like soldier gear, motorcycles, and so on, mixed with old tech, like the phones and jukeboxes. This blend, she says, helps push the idea that a man can carry around a giant sword without raising suspicion. She mentions that Kobayashi said in an interview back in 07 how this mix of modern and analog tech helped create a world. This, she says, is why there is a concern for Lady having such high tech looking gear, and the director responded that there's always been subtle inclutions of science fiction elements in DMC, like the Uroboros tech, Nico's, or that the Order being able to create a giant statue to 'save' the world implies the kind of technology that would qualify as futuristic (while, to me, it sounded more like they used ritualistic magic).

She took this opportunity to ask if there'd be romance in his show and he mentioned that there was room for it.

She finishes asking if there is anything he'd like to share with the fans. It's a bit wordy so if you want to read it it's at the end of the video in English so you can read it yourselves at the 6 min mark.

Dexerto: Devil May Cry’s showrunner praises Asmongold after putting him in the show

Devil May Cry’s anime adaptation has been divisive amongst fans, but it’s a huge win overall for Netflix. It’s already been greenlit for a second season, and the show just came out.

Reviews for the Devil May Cry series have been all over the place, with critics rating it highly while users have been split on it. Those who have played the games are saddened by the differences between the source material and the show, while those new to the series seem to be enjoying the ride. Regardless, it’s doing very well for Netflix, and they’re clearly interested in doing more with the franchise.

But one seemingly small scene from the show sparked controversy for an entirely different reason: Someone who looked like the streamer Asmongold appeared in the very first episode.

While the show didn’t confirm it was him, showrunner Adi Shankar’s interactions outside of the show make it clear who he was referring to. His praise for the streamer hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Devil May Cry showrunner says Asmongold ‘spits facts’

When Devil May Cry came out, people noticed a certain livestreamer in the Devil May Cry series who bore a striking resemblance to Asmongold. Putting the two side-by-side, it’s hard not to see it. The show nails it even down to which teeth he’s missing.

However, it just felt like a tongue-in-cheek reference until showrunner Adi Shankar tweeted about it. He posted several images of Asmongold on his Twitter timeline with no context before ultimately posting a comparison pic, revealing that the streamer was indeed the person he intended to represent in the show.

“I’ve never been more excited for a Season 2 in my life,” the Asmongold replied.

Shankar matched his excitement, giving the streamer praise and making it clear that the character’s arc in the show matches what he thinks of the streamer.

The whole point of the character is that what he’s saying is taken as crazy talk, something that couldn’t possibly be true. He’s meant to look like sort of a conspiracy theorist, but it turned out that he was right all along.

Asmongold in the Devil May Cry show

“They laughed at you and worshipped the late-night talk show puppets who were built to distract them from the truth. Now the terrorist demons from hell are here!!! Keep spitting facts — truth has a resonance,” Shankar replied.

The comments on this tweet are incredibly divided, with one half praising his take and agreeing with his opinion on Asmongold, and the other calling out his handling of the show and his support of the controversial streamer.

Tbh, I see Itsuno, DmC guy and this Shankar guy pretty much did the same thing: put their ideas into a franchise that's not originally theirs. No wonder Itsuno was supportive of DmC back then. Itsuno got away with it, maybe because he knew when to shut up...? And he was involved with four to five DMC games, so fans got used to him at one point ‍

dragonmaster said he got a job as a journalist so he's probably just busy
Hopefully he finally has gotten good taste in entertainment media since then.

Chancey has always been meh. Dude doesn't know what he's talking about 90% of the time. I remember this guy literally defending DmC being locked on 30fps and says 60fps gives people headache (and then later getting a definitive edition of the same game on 60fps lmao). Well, 60+ fps is now the standards for many games especially PC gaming.

Just another few posts that aged like milk from DmC defenders of this forum.

Itsuno got away with it, maybe because he knew when to shut up...?
That's the key to it, yeah.

As someone who dogs on Itsuno for saying dumb things, I can confirm it's specifically about his execution of ideas like vetoing sassy, cigarette-smoking, older Lady when Bingo suggested it because "she has to be a highschool girl, the Japanese fans don't like swarthy types" only for him to apply the exact aesthetic to Nico later on because he claimed it's his fetish, or the whole "Nero has to stop Dante and Vergil from fighting because it reminds me of an anime I saw as a child, the absent father rescues the son with a mecha no one's ever seen before" being a total misappropriation of Great Mazinger, or the "no angels in DMC, Heaven doesn't exist".

He's not spamming Twitter about his personal politics, bullsh!tting that "actually Vergil isn't a villain, he's misunderstood and so is Mundus," and blathering about 9/11.

I remember originally, the Force Edge is Dante's signature weapon and was even mentioned in the novels.
When Itsuno took over, suddenly a random sword that appeared in DMC2 was now Dante's signature weapon: Rebellion.
Which started a new lore, that Dante was gifted the Rebellion, while Yamato was gifted to Vergil.

Whether people like it or not, some of DmC's ideas wounded up in both DMC4:SE and DMC5 (especially the idea that Doppelganger is Vergil's signature ability).
Love it or hate it, DmC lives on in future games.

I know Lady's special squad uniform was supposed to be a reference to Captain Commando's outfit ("lol, we shoved a random Capcom reference") or something but I still think it feels weird and out of place in the whole series.

Itsuno had to forward the story so of course he included new ideas. Except for the Heaven part that's just stating the obvious.

These Western writers on the other hand can't stop themselves failing upwards. Shankar just posted something about BlazBlue much to everyone's chagrin...

New ideas to forward the story? Good.

"New ideas" that are actually old ideas rejected previously and then copped to with a b.s. reason, and new ideas that come at the expense of character development? Bad.

DMC3 could've had a Sassy Older Lady giving a 19yo Dante sh!t at a point where he deserves it because he's still immature and hasn't come into his own yet. Instead, Lady occupies the same space as Trish and Lucia under a different coat of paint, "the heroine younger than the hero, who has to learn from him what makes someone a human or a devil".

But because "Itsuno has a fetish", we have Nico in 5 giving Nero sh!t when he's older than Dante was in 3 so he shouldn't need it, but he also gains a little brother complex he didn't have before (to where Dante calling him a dead weight one time triggers him so badly he's got his undies in a twist about it for the rest of the game).

Nero magically develops to be the "grown up in the house" stopping the brothers from fighting, partially because Dante's character devolved to center around Vergil, and partially because Lady and Trish are part of the Vergil Defense Squad and think if Nero allows Vergil to die, it will invariably traumatize him: implying that every single person processes trauma in the exact same way with no difference. Just because Lady now feels bad about killing Arkham who she'd known for her whole life, Nero will feel the same way about a guy he just found out was his dad. Ridiculous. And it's motivated wholly because Itsuno didn't like the idea of Lady killing Arkham in the first place in DMC3, so short of reversing it or blatantly retconning it so that Dante and Vergil were the ones to land the finishing blow after all, he has Lady regret it long after the fact.
