Ok the proof he is Dead is in DMC4 story area read Nelo's bio it clearly says Nelo Angelo is the "departed" brother of Dante. It also states that shards of Nelos armor was used to create the Bianco's and Alto's which means the explosion shattered the armor into millions of shards.
