Metal Gear Rising Demo Impresions

So I just finished playing the metal gear rising demo, and I know it has nothing to do with DMC but as some have labeled it the new demo I felt it was okay to talk about it.

First thing I notice is the visuals, it's a very pretty game and it has this really cool, clean art direction that I really appreciate. I enjoy the level design in the demo as it is very open, or at least seemingly so, seem to be only one real path forward but I am not saying that is a bad thing in a heavy duty hack and slash game.

It feels nothing like DmC or DMC for that matter and you can really tell it has a Platinum Games finish on it. It's in some ways closer to Bayonetta than anything. But the thing that sticks out the most is of course the combat!

I went into this demo feeling very anxious to play this awesome game and left it wondering if I should ever even buy it all because of the combat. I do really think it has a cool system but I found it to be a little cumbersome and strange, it just did not feel right to me for some reason. I just did not feel like I had a lot of options in disposing of enemies. Yes I know it's a demo but even the Bayonetta demo, DMC4 demo and DmC demo gave me plenty of tools to see what the combat was all about and hook me into paying 60 bucks for each one, this demo did not do that for me.

The one area that has always seemed iffy to me was the Zandetsu technique where you go into slow motion and slice up your enemies. I found it strange to control and difficult to target things I wanted to cut, and at the same time, it felt like an instant kill move. Most enemies die with one slice when you use it with the exception of the bigger robot enemies. I t almost negates the use of having combos and different attacks and the penalty for using it is very minimal.

From this demo I also got a weird feeling of not knowing how I was supposed to play. I did not know if it was okay to just run into battles slicing and dicing or if I needed a stealthier approach and just left me confused. I also noticed that the cutscenes drag on a little too long for my taste. When i'm playing an action game I really just want to play. I also did not appreciate having to slow down so my Russian buddy could talk to me and tell me what to do, that really kills gameplay momentum for me. The voice acting is not horrible but is really not that good but it is not too much of an issue at this point.

I know it's just a demo but it really did turn me off and I really wanted to like this game. I plan to replay it a few more times to see if I can have a change of heart but at this point I just dont know.

The General Gaming Discussion section. We're in the middle of a heated debate over the existence of Raiden and the game itself. Also, normal discussion about the demo as well.

Played the demo, I don't know why the hell some people calls MGR the true DMC5?
If there's a game that should be called the true DMC5 it will be either Bayo 1 or 2.

Anyway, The game isn't difficult and there's no challenge at all.
There's no way that you can die, Raiden is OP. Nothing can kills him.
Just use the Blade Mode and gets the enemies fluids and you're ready to go, This means that whenever you kill someone your health goes to 100%.

Parrying, That **** is OP. NOBODY CAN TOUCHES RAIDEN, You can parry every single attack.

You can spam attacks on the boss, The boss will never attacks you if you spam attacks on him and by parrying his attacks you'll never die.

Overall it's a good game, I'll buy this game because I enjoy playing HnS games, I don't care if this game is easy or for casuals, I just said that because people claim that DmC is for causal gamers yet they hype MGR? Hypocrite too much?

I enjoyed the Blade Mode in MGR, It's what makes it different from any HnS game, Also the graphics are AMAZING! and I like how you can cut almost everything =D

tl;dr : You're playing as the overpowered cut-scenes MGS4 Raiden in MGR, Nothing can kills you.

.
I noticed that too. You can even parry an attack while doing a stinger-like move.

I like MGR, its a challenge... but only if you let it be a challenge (Just like DmC). I also love going up to the soldiers and finishing them off with one move... it's a satisfaction that DmC can't give (Heaven or Hell is too risky to have fun with swords).

From the hour or so that I've played in the demo, the issues I've had were the same as DmC... except in MGR I got really annoyed by how Raiden can't run when he's talking to whoever's giving him orders. It totally kills the repay value of the demo (and I'm assuming this will be the same for the full game).
Here's my attempt at it... I'm not good by any means, but I pulled off some cool looking things.

The MGR demo was pretty bad, in my opinion, and I don't mean it in the 'bad means good' kind of way. I must've done something wrong, because I couldn't perform any combos. Not only that, but the boss battle was broken. He kept attacking me, I tried to dodge, and he would just follow me with his attack. It's like he was heat-seeking or something.

I tried to block once, but it didn't work. It said something about using the left stick and pressing X, but it doesn't always work, it seems.

The voice acting is less than mediocre, but the writing isn't bad. I like it if it's got a little bit of that DMC humor.

The rest of the demo worked very well, though.

I'll be keeping an eye on the game, just in case it's better than the demo shows.

Yeah, I agree. MGR will be challenging if only the player want it to be, If you didn't get the enemies fluids everytime, It will be hard. But I don't think anyone will do that.

The game is fantastic, I can't wait until I play it. But you're right, These stupid unskippable dialogues ruins the replaying value, It's as bad as the unskippable cut-scenes in DmC. Seriously NOBODY GIVE A DAMN ABOUT THE STORY AND THE DIALOGUES IN ACTION GAMES, WE JUST WANT TO KILL PEOPLE!

I disagree. The unskippable cut-scenes in DmC are much better, they only last for like a few seconds. MGR's dialogues last for almost a minute. And it's just about direction.

Even if it was for seconds, I don't like it. DMC was about the action, There never was unskippable cut-scenes in DMC3-4.
But yeah, MGR is much worse, It last for minutes. I can't stand that.

MGR should at least make these dialogues skippable by beating the game once, But I doubt they will do that.

Damn you Kojima and your writing, your long ass cut-scenes are ANNOYING. -.-

I felt the same way TC did after playing the demo and I went in really wanting to like it.

It feels like it would take some getting used to. It is just really different then other H&S games and I dont like the dodge/parry system or the camera so far.

The graphics are awesome though and I will most likely eventually play it but I am no longer in a hurry to play it.

Already gave my two cents on this game so I wont need to repeat it you guys did for me :P

All im gona say is I expected something more from platinum this is just idk. As a MGS fan this dissapoints me :\ cause it dones nothing new and (the demo) was quite easy compared to DmC

How did you do the side step move?

The parry is the block, once you figure it out its not hard to do and its your main defensive move. And when it comes to combos there wasnt and DMC like combos but if you've played All Star Battle Royale he has pretty much the same attacks for the moves part. It works like Ninja Gaiden like triangle square traingle.

I liked the demo myself, felt the fodder was too easy when you could use blade mode on them from the get go though. Liked that there are parts where u can stealth kill everything. And if you cant get the parry input down or just cant avoid certain attacks you can die pretty easily, i got stunned a few times by the geckos(i think it was them) and then i got shot by a rocket and i died even though i had a little more than 50% hp.

The only thing i liked more about this game than DmC was that they used the forward back inputs to add extra moves and if you rotate the analog stick and press triangle raiden will breakdance with the sword on his foot to cut everything around him. Besides the special move imputs MGRR and DmC dont have much in common, the whole flow of gameplay feels different(or is it just me?). Its more of a button masher with parries in between since you're graded by how many hits you can get and now what moves you used to get those hits but its seems there are ways to look pretty BA while in combat if you want.
