So I just finished playing the metal gear rising demo, and I know it has nothing to do with DMC but as some have labeled it the new demo I felt it was okay to talk about it.
First thing I notice is the visuals, it's a very pretty game and it has this really cool, clean art direction that I really appreciate. I enjoy the level design in the demo as it is very open, or at least seemingly so, seem to be only one real path forward but I am not saying that is a bad thing in a heavy duty hack and slash game.
It feels nothing like DmC or DMC for that matter and you can really tell it has a Platinum Games finish on it. It's in some ways closer to Bayonetta than anything. But the thing that sticks out the most is of course the combat!
I went into this demo feeling very anxious to play this awesome game and left it wondering if I should ever even buy it all because of the combat. I do really think it has a cool system but I found it to be a little cumbersome and strange, it just did not feel right to me for some reason. I just did not feel like I had a lot of options in disposing of enemies. Yes I know it's a demo but even the Bayonetta demo, DMC4 demo and DmC demo gave me plenty of tools to see what the combat was all about and hook me into paying 60 bucks for each one, this demo did not do that for me.
The one area that has always seemed iffy to me was the Zandetsu technique where you go into slow motion and slice up your enemies. I found it strange to control and difficult to target things I wanted to cut, and at the same time, it felt like an instant kill move. Most enemies die with one slice when you use it with the exception of the bigger robot enemies. I t almost negates the use of having combos and different attacks and the penalty for using it is very minimal.
From this demo I also got a weird feeling of not knowing how I was supposed to play. I did not know if it was okay to just run into battles slicing and dicing or if I needed a stealthier approach and just left me confused. I also noticed that the cutscenes drag on a little too long for my taste. When i'm playing an action game I really just want to play. I also did not appreciate having to slow down so my Russian buddy could talk to me and tell me what to do, that really kills gameplay momentum for me. The voice acting is not horrible but is really not that good but it is not too much of an issue at this point.
I know it's just a demo but it really did turn me off and I really wanted to like this game. I plan to replay it a few more times to see if I can have a change of heart but at this point I just dont know.
