Is DMC4 Forgiving?

Wuodan

Present Day. Present Time.
It's been a while I played the vanilla game. So I started over and right now I'm in SoS difficulty. I managed to pass Credo fight with 3 continues and a Vital Star S. Yet the game gave me "B". Don't you think that's a little odd compared to the other DMC games? Or was the game always this forgiving?

Personally, I never cared all too much about the grading system. I mean, sure I can also get those high stylish rankings being an avid Devil May Cry player, but I tend to focus on how much fun I'm having just playing the game. Being more forgiving in scoring is not a big deal to me.

Some players out there also just wanna play and not be told the game hates them every 5 minutes heh. There's still those hardcore options for the masochist out there, but you kinda see what I'm saying. Even though this is just a post about my thoughts on grading systems lol.

@Chancey289 Yes, I see what you mean. Yet I kinda miss the DMC that asks "Do you want to try Easy mode?" after dying a bunch of times. I want the game to yell "Is this all you've got?" right to my face, difference of opinion I guess. Reminds me of "Taste the Blood".

Well, DMC 1 is still my personal favorite so yea, there is this initiative to keep trying and push yourself when the game is basically telling you, "You can drop to easy mode if you want, and your testicles will look better in my little box anyway."

Devil May Cry gets overshadowed with just how much fun I have so that's why I was never all that worried about the grading.

It's not like I don't like a good challenge. I'm a big fan of stuff like MegaMan and Metroidvania games. Bigger retro gamer than anything, and you know how challenging older games can be.

Compared to DMC1, 2(for horrible reasons), 3, and DmC Definitive Edition. The mission rank in DMC4 now is probably the most forgiving of all the games. Unless they change it in SE.

I personally liked the ranking system in DMC4 the most, it was simple and to a degree forgiving, I never got the hang of the rankings of DMC3 and I've probably had around 500 to 700 hours in that game (all platforms and re installs combined).
But I usually don't play for rankings so, yeah...

DMC4 doesn't give a damn how much damage you received and how much items you used.

If you didn't take any damage nor didn't use any items, then respectively, you get a "No Damage" & "No Item Used" bonuses that adds to the score but doesn't influence the ranking.

It's good to know since I sometimes let one or two hits slide since I had no idea of the impact it had.
I was hit so many times by Dante in Mission 11 and thought I'd get a B but got S instead (all S in time, Style and Orbs).

I was still thinking about DMC3 requirements in mind and this is what made me realize that the game doesn't care about how much damage you took.

You can get hit once or 50 times it doesn't really matter since the bonus is only for no damage at all, like the no item bonus, using 1 item and using 10 items has no negative impact on your rank, only the 1st item use because you won't get the x1.2

It was forgiving in combat and enemy department compared to DMC 3. But bloody palace was unforgiving. Especially dante vs credo was frustrating. Normally, Any DMC 3 player would prefer royal-guard against him but it would take a few trial and error to get it right. And it's unforgiving to die all the way upto level 80 jus trying to figure out royal-guard timing. Also the ranking system was meh. While i like exploration in games like Resident evil,Collecting orbs was jus a chore. But the game was balanced compared to DMC 3. Single style for dante through out a particular portion was kinda handicap. Always wanted one more style to go. But i think the hurdle was configuring controls for more than one style. DMC 4 had the most complex control system for dante. And if you're playing on PC, There's legendary dark knight mode which is considered the hardest.

So, overall, the game seemed balanced and there are tougher options in the game. But they were optional and not mandatory. Like mastering royal-guard or dante himself.

More reason to add a "Boss Mode" in DMC4 Special Edition.

Not only that, you'd have the same problems with Trish, since it also sounds like she can only fight Angelo Credo in the 80th floor of the Bloody Palace.
