In defense of the Netflix anime

im fine with the vergil twist in the show. its a cool way to bring him and fill in the gap between his childhood and the present day.

i do agree about Lady overshadowing Dante. I wished Shankar developed Dante's past beyond where Dante was in 3 and the manga.

the original pitch for Tony Redgrave was that he was a cop with mysterious powers. So that wouldve been a better fit for this project.

Or that cool concept art (fan made) where he’s a pizza delivery guy lol

that would be a good pitch for a DMC spoof
This was the image I saw long ago lol

I keep seeing everyone hate on it but why? It's clear from the jump its remixing the canon but genuinely feels like it's made with love and respect to the series. A big complaint I'm seeing is they "nerfed" Dante but his power level is wildly inconsistent even in the games, he can fight demons and survive stabbings but a metal gate in DMC1 or 3 are enough to totally block his path. He can teleport and fly but doesn't just head straight to his objective everytime. Idk. I'm just willing to look past small story inconsistencies like I am the game inconsistencies
I'm confused about people complaining about the "overt political themes" mostly because it seems like the normal amount? i didn't notice it any more than in any other thing, and if people are like "not in my DMC" its a bit get politics out of my video games when politics inherently guide media so like?
i remember the manga and i was excited to see that revisited cause as a tween i was sad that they never finished the story.
I also happen to love taking existing stories and twisting things like in a fanfic. The human demon hunters association is something i've seen in a lot of fanfics and i think it's fun to explore how to make a new take on the DMC lore without changing the baseline as much as they did with DmC. I never played it because of that.
I also like the original anime, and was so glad they made Morrison and Patty canon to the games in some way.
I think if we got a retelling of the exact same story it wouldn't have been quite how people wanted but too close to it for giving it a fresh vibe.

I'm a bit confused as to just how people thought the anime would be. I'm personally excited for more and think introducing some of these concepts in the anime will give people more ideas in their fanfics, which i am a fan of.

most fans probably wanted it to be more inline with the canon like the last anime was (a new story set in between the games) rather than another reboot.

even as someone who liked both reboots, i can agree with that sentiment.

The show has plenty of lazy writing, but "Mary Sue" Lady is among the worst of it, and it's plain to see. Lady swearing every single line is just egregious. Dante doesn't do that. Dante doesn't even smoke, because smoking is not cool (Kamiya).

Lady is a better character in DMC3 because she is important to the plot, she has history that is mysterious and interesting, and motivations that are clear. Even when her motivations are put into question by Arkham when she has a moment of doubt, she grows as a character because of it, and her motivations become even clearer. Lady is feminine in DMC3 while being powerful. It's well done.

In the show she is somehow superior to Dante in every facet. She is smarter, she is cooler, she is meaner, tougher, and more capable. I mean... ok I guess. But that is a sin in media-- do not outshine the protagonist of the show. That is rarely done to any level of satisfaction. I dunno, maybe Jujitsu Kaizen with Gojo being better than the pink haired guy. Her foul mouthed persona is just hard to endure. She lacks any femininity and feels like she is just one of the guys. I really like Lady's character in the series, but I am about as displeased as anyone could be with her portrayal in this anime.

I'm totally fine with Lady being a main character if she is her DMC3 self. That would be wonderful. She could have her own anime spin-off series. She could take a lead role in a game. She's awesome and interesting, but not the slop Adi Shankar served up with her. They also could not help themselves without somehow letting Donald Trump live rent free in their heads by combining him with George W. Bush as some kind of pseudo "evil conservative" president in the very first episode of the series. Boring. Obvious. The White Rabbit ideas were interesting until they made the demons into de facto illegal immigrants that we have to cry for somehow. Audience May Cry due to how ham fisted the politics were. They really just wanted to slap the target demographic (men 18-25) and shame them for being men that dared to vote for the bad orange man. Who are we kidding, here? That's just the truth of it. The "American Idiot" sequence made me want to vomit.

Not sure what I expected, but the hatred toward Christianity from Netflix Anime was also on display with its caricature of the Vice President being some "evil Christian." It wasn't as bad as the Castlevania series was toward Christianity, but it wasn't very fair at all. If you ask me, Devil May Cry takes a lot of inspiration from Christian culture to its benefit as a series. The Divine Comedy has influenced the world's perception of Hell possibly more than the Bible. Obviously, the Bible informs DMC to a certain degree as well. The Gothic architecture of the series is also a nod to Christendom's influences on the games. Rather than reject that out of hand, perhaps embracing the influence and telling your story within that world would be better. That said, I do not think of DMC as a particularly Christian game. It just has Christian influences on it.

I didn't even hate the Netflix Anime. It was fine. Great action sequences. Overall nice artwork. I liked JYB voicing a young Dante. They brought back beloved villains/bosses from the series. I really liked that a lot. I didn't even mind that they changed the character of the White Rabbit as compared to the manga. It was kinda cool that he was a long-lost brother of Lady. That's a pretty good concept, and gives the character some grounding and relationship to the main cast.

The color scheme of the show was overall fantastic. I liked the opening sequence even if it was Limp Bizkit haha! I also think that people just have a bad attitude about new things sometimes, and I am also guilty of that. We cannot bear to see our characters changed in any way, and I can live with being wrong about that.

Let me also say, the action sequences were much better than the original anime's action scenes. That show was not about the action, though. I like the original anime a lot, but it was just not a great action-oriented show. It just sort of weirdly skipped that part of DMC.
