Greg from Capcom Unity muses on DMC and DmC

Hey guys, Greg here. Appreciate the shout-out. Someone's really paying attention (guess I'm not surprised). You'll notice I didn't actually syndicate that post to the Unity homepage or even the DMC group blog, precisely because I didn't want it to turn into a debate about my sincerity.

I have a lot of personal thoughts on DmC, partially because of the kinds of memories divulged in that post, partially because of what it represents--in my mind--for Capcom (a very well-done marriage of Eastern and Western design philosophy, a new bar-setter for storytelling, a high-quality and properly delivered/timed DLC offering, a high-risk venture that places faith in the creative instincts of its developer, etc etc etc.).

Occasionally I debate making blog posts based on these personal thoughts, but it always occurs to me that I work for Capcom so they may not come off as sincere, especially to people who have high doubts about the game.

Anyway, I guess I just went ahead and made the post this time, just for myself and whoever else happened to stumble upon it, but it's true that this was not really required of me by the job; I wrote this from home on my own time while eating leftover Italian food. =DDD

Thanks,
G
Greg! It's great to see you join the forums! Thanks for supporting this game so much, you have done alot for us DmC fans and I would just like to say thank you.

I'm guessing he will occasionally drop by if he has to make a post that concerns something he said or if the company has made a big announcement he may come but other wise no I think he will stick to unity. :/ That's just a guess though.

You're probably right! I had hoped he could stop the rumour mill... ahhh well!

He does as much as he can about that over at Capcom-Unity, since he works there :p
Very true but I've heard Capcom Unity forums are hell on earth so I feel his efforts would not go to waste here where we tend to respect all opinions that aren't arrogantly stated!

Whoa! Welcome to the forums Greg, I'm sure all of us here are very happy with your entry xD
I hope to see you around here more often!

Maybe, but the point is addressing rumors that are brought out on the forum, and him confirming their worth. Any bullshit that follows from people not believing him is incidental, and what matters is confirmation on something's validity - like the stuff about that "leaked ending."

Yeah that was a doozy. It's one thing to be critical of the game's features/changes/sensibility, but to lie about the game because you hate it and want other people to hate it too is uhhhh essentially the same logic employed by terrorists, not to mention the demons in the very game being targeted. The irony!

While I understand that this question is both a matter of opinion and you may not be able to answer I'll ask anyway. How do you feel about some of the games argueably less then stellar writing. The most prominent example being the F U battle between Dante and the succubus. Will that be something that we "get" later or is it something that some will like and some wont?

Thanks for stopping by! I'm glad you and the NT peeps are still upbeat about things, despite the hostility. It's all very perplexing, really. I haven't seen this sort of hatred for a game in some time, and I still feel that the anger is misguided. >_<

Anyway, I hope for the best. I'd like to think that the pre-order numbers are pretty solid by now - it has been awhile since the last DMC game, and that'll make fans pretty hungry for one. Plus the game looks very impressive in its own right. No one can take that away from it.

Keep your chin up, Greg!

In reality as a Capcom Liason people know about your blog and are aware of your blog regardless if you post it on the front page or link it in a group, because you make tons of posts promoting DmC. I personally can't judge your sincerity because only you can, but the technique you used of "little media coverage" is also utilized by celebrities and politicians alike when they ask for no "media coverage" but word gets out anyway from the people at an event, charity, hospital, etc anyway.

It's great that you like the game you support but saying things like "I posted this at home" when many people do work at home just feels like you are trying too hard to discredit this as PR. Also saying "Its not part of my job" when you linkedin says that you were hired to be a "blogger" and a "friendly face for fans" is yah...

Why you gotta bust the guy's apple bag? Who cares where and when he wrote, or where he uploaded it? Can't a guy just have a sincere feeling without getting scrutinized because of who employs him?

The world isn't chock full of attention-seeking shills with ulterior motives, some people just want to voice their feelings, regardless of their position in society. It's not really hypocritical for him to love a game just because he works for the company making it. I'd probably do the same if I was a fan of a series, and then got to work for the company who makes it later on. I don't mean to white knight anyone or whatever, but I get mildly annoyed when people question other people's feelings, regardless of who is involved. You may have tried to not question his sincerity and whatnot, but his intentions are sorta intertwined with them, so when you question one, you question the other.

Sometimes it really is just for the love of the game :/

Welcome Greg! I was hoping, HOPING(!) that someone from Capcom Unity would join. We also need NT to get in here too. This community is the best community to go for-for logical arguments and KNOW what is good and bad about DmC. I'm hoping NT aren't using YouTube comments as a source of feedback. It's BS, this forum is the best source of feedback for NT. It's like Ono or Seth (R.I.P...sorta) going to Eventhubs for fighting game feedback.

Well, that's the problem with being public-facing, I guess. I'll stop trying to defend my motivations and just let you guys judge for yourselves. I actually just came to this site out of curiosity, but am quickly gathering that this is indeed a great place for real discussion of the game. I'll drop by when I can =)

Would you maybe be able to shed a little light on this, at all, Super Fighting Robot Gregaman?

Meh, people can make that accusation to justify anything they want. If I say I'm looking forward to DmC then post a reason I like the game someone could easily say to me; "Well, we can't really trust what you because you said you're looking forward to it". Just post whatever you want to say; no point in censoring yourself for the people who wouldn't believe you in any case.

But DMC.org does seem to be a good community. A bit or arguing here and there but most users seem to treat each other with respect; and really, what else can you ask of an internet message board?

I do feel that some crucial pieces of context have been left out of some of the trailers in favor of immediate impact, and that this has given people some very hard-hitting misrepresentations of the characters. It was the same thing with the initial announcement and Dante looking all beaten up.

But yeah, while I do think Dante lays the profanity on pretty thick--he is a ****ed off, tormented orphan on the streets, after all--you get a sense of his underlying vulnerability in the greater context of the full game. Keep in mind that this is the story of a young Dante discovering his origins and coming into his own, and NT's put a lot of thought into his motivations and how the world(s?) around him continues to affect him throughout the game.

My take on the "eff you" scene was that it was an unfortunate part to single out when people still hadn't seen much of Dante or the story. It's just a silly throwaway gag in the grand scheme of things, not an example of the characters' depth.

Can I just ask: is the story great and well written? This is including the characters and their dialogue! :)
