how do they work?
and can anyone add a reminder to their schedule?

Just by adding an event to the calender it should store them in your reminders.

Ive never tried doing it but as far as im aware you put something in the calender and set it as an event reminder. Then prior to the event starting you get an email reminding you that its happening. We dont have a link in the top of the forums anymore for the calendar however.
