A self-diagnosed misanthrope
Before we go on with plot ideas, I think it's best to see what we can tie in from the first game.
For example, we see Dante's eyes shift from his usual color to some sort of demonic red-ish thing by the end of the game.
This could likely mean Dante has unlocked the full potential of Devil Trigger, so we should be able to have a more satisfying Devil Trigger, with wings and a great amount of power. This gives NT a chance to redeem for that lousy Devil Trigger they got us in the first game. The Devil Trigger should also play a key part in the storyline, with Dante becoming slightly more violent as the game progresses, sorta like the symbiote arc in the good ol' Spider-Man comics.
Kat's role should be expanded. I think she has great potential to be an amazing female character, so NT should be careful not to ruin her, as hard as that may be. Same thing goes for Phineas. We really need a father figure kind of character, a wise man and Phineas is just the guy. Have him join Dante and provide him with locations of several VIDs, since, after all, he is a demon himself.
Onto the story.
I think it's best if we timeskip to 5-6 months, since the ending of DmC has left a lot going on. Prologue mission likely to feature Dante saving a military squad from a horde of demons. Before we go on further, it's been established that the military has already began clean-up operations right after Limbo and the real world were merged together, as proven by several choppers patrolling the skies afterwards. Anyway, after Dante saves them, he obviously demonstrates himself as a friendly, so the military decide to help him. Since he's grown up overly fond of Kat in the past months, he decides to have her under military custody, to prevent her from facing any threat. However, she still helps Dante via her spells and her knowledge on demons.
In the other hand, the villain or the villainess should be a remnant of the past, Mundus' experiment. An extremely dangerous demon, combat-wise and intelligence-wise, which was created by Mundus for the sole reason to serve him or anyone who he/she deems as worthy of being the ruler of the world. But with Mundus and his heir completely obliterated, this servant demon deems a nephilim trapped in another dimension as the only leader worthy of the title King of Demons; Virgil.
Now I guess this is where it all begins. We have this strong demon who by all means tries to get Virgil back to the land of the living, where he can take over Mundus' throne. Dante hasn't opened his shop as of yet (because honestly, attempts to open a shop in the middle of a warzone seem pretty counterproductive) but he still collaborates with Phineas.
One more thing, I also think Dante should unlock the full potential of the Angel Trigger by the end of the game, kind of explaining how Dante even though raised in a violent ambient turns out to be pure after all.
