The legend of Zelda character Link is an famous character in Gaming
I have BARELY played LEgend of Zelda (i had playstation) but i looked from the fence and thought "**** -.-" when i was alot younger. Because Legend of Zelda is a great game. The character is also really nice. Link was pretty much the same.
PERHAPS more famous than Legend of zelda is Mario games.
If you ask any teenager girl who don't call themself a Gamer who Mario is. They will be able to say "It's the red hat black hair guy".
Dante is that kind of character to many fans. So that is why many peoples feelings make them rage.
P.S Did you know that the mirrow opponent in DMC 1 is probably a reference to Legend of Zelda "Shadow link"?

If I asked someone on the street who Dante or Devil May Cry is I doubt many would know what the hell I was talking about. Also, it's interesting that you used Link as an example since the "Wind Waker" design caused fans to revolt just as much as Dante's redesign did. But many years later Wind Waker is seen as one of the best Zelda games due to it's gorgeous art style. What you don't realize is that EVERY major changed to a liked series is met with hate. Looking at comic books, I see the same damn thing every time a super hero is changed or replaced. When Bruce Wayne was "killed" and replaced by his former sidekick Dick Grayson (seriously, I can't say the name D*ck?), the comic forums were clogged with "BRUCE WAYNE=BATMAN" and "THIS WRITER IS A HACK" posts. No one said that they were going to buy a Batman story without Bruce Wayne but when the debut of Dick Grayson as Batman happened, guess what? The book went to the top of the charts and was critically acclaimed, and do you know why, because it was well written, gorgeously drawn, and exciting. Overtime... Richard grew more and more popular as Batman to the point where he remained Batman even after Bruce had returned. Fans enjoyed this new generation of characters and the "Bruce Wayne=Batman" posts were fewer and fewer. Flash forward to now and Bruce is back as the only Batman and guess what? The fans were ****ed, the forums were clogged with "DICK GRAYSON=BATMAN" posts, and many swore off of Batman comics. Then when the re-debut of Bruce Wayne as Batman happened, guess what? The book went to the top of the charts, blah, blah, blah. Now, you're probably thinking "That's different, they still didn't change what the main character looked and acted like" But the thing is Bruce Wayne has in fact changed over the years to suit the times:

See, he's been a murderous psychopath, campy, crazy monster, murderous but sane(Jack Nicholson), a mass murdering psychopath and now gritty/realistic. Looking at the spectrum of fans you will see that there are fans of all the types of Jokers. Remember when Heath Ledger became the Joker and showed off his new look, remember when people called him "Broke Back Joker" or commented how he wouldn't be able to top Nicholson, how did that turn out? Overall, what I'm trying to say is that Iconic characters change all the time, and the vast majority of the time they are met with disdain, but a lot of the time the same people that scream and complain that this version will ruin everything, often change their tune when the product turns out to actually be well written and interesting even though it's different. It's ridiculous and frankly stupid to label something as "gay" and "emo" before the product is even out.

I never said that if you asked a teenage girl on street who Dante is they would know the answer. I said Dante is like that kind of character to many fans. As for Legend of Zelda WindWaker - the artstyle was different but Link had still blonde hair, green clothes and a sword and shield. Link was pretty much the same character just in a different art style.
EVERY original Dante fan expects new artstyle with new developers. But they also expect the SAME character. And DmC Dante is not DMC Dante. Not even judging by looks.
I dislike comparing comics and movies to a video game. In comics and movies they change characters or reboot the comic serie or the movie so much that it´s just "WTF". The Batman movies has had many different "Batmans". But in a video game you can still keep the same character.
DmC Dante is not the same Dante and he is a punk character. Emo is a branch or something of Punk movement.
And the Batman and Joker pictures:
The look of Batman and Joker is pretty much the same.
And just because there is many actors or characters taking over the role of a alias such as "Batman" does not mean this should apply to video games.

I thought he was saying that if you ask a fan of DMC series, he/she would undoubtedly tell that Dante's a silver haired, half human-half demon guy rather than, you know, the DmC Dante. That's how I interpreted it. I didn't think he said 'Dante was an iconic character'.

It's pointless to argue with a person who won't buy the game. I had this situation a little bit back, where a friend wanted me to play a game despite me not liking the very downer story it had. He got upset, but we've patched things up by agreeing to disagree. I think that's what we all have to do instead of arguing pointlessly and going in goddamned circles.
Playing a game and buying a game are two different things. I'm not that stubborn not to try out a game if it was available to me and someone asked my opinion about it. I'm no fan of FPS and racing games, simply because I'm not very good at either (and I get seasick by playing FPS games due to the camera-view XD), but instead of going "Nyeh, it sucks!" just because I don't care for such games, I'm willing to try them out. And if I haven't played the game, I refuse to make an opinion about it. Then I'll just say "I wouldn't know, haven't played it"...

But i do like First person games like Oblivion and Mirrors Edge.
I actually like being about to live vicariously through fantasy worlds, and video games is the only way. Unless your into dressing up like a knight and fighting your friends........ i'll stick to games

I am a fan of the original Dante from the first DMC, and NT's Dante reminds me of the original more than 3 and 4's version.
The reason Video games often keep the same character is because said characters often have little to no personalities but are instead just avatars that players project onto. You mentioned Mario and link as an example, now give me a detailed description of their personalities because I sure as hell can't and I doubt anyone else can just by playing the video games alone and ignoring all of the god awful books and comic versions. If you look at games that focus a large part of the experience on story you'll notice that they either end after a few installments or change characters each game. Examples: Final Fantasy, Silent Hill, Resident Evil(eh), Uncharted, Grand Theft Auto, Metal Gear, etc. They change because after a while you're just going to get the core fanbase interested in said characters long drawn out quest and no one else. Comic books have been around for almost a century at this point and every five-ten years something big happens to the character or he/she gets replaced because people lose intereast. Even though I like the new version of DmC I would rather have three games that have great stories rather than decades of uninspired soap operas. As video games get older and interactive story telling grows more important we're going to see a lot more "iconic" characters changing. DmC is the first (no, not even the first) of many.

I really can´t bother to reply to everyone who thinks DmC Dante is THE Dante. I will however reply to Asomodiius:

I would never accuse you for being stupid just because you don't want to spend money on a game. But I will call you ignorant and narrowminded if you pre-judge the game without having played it through. You can judge the graphics, the art style and all the other things you can pick up from watching trailers and screenshots, but that's about it.
Sadly, we live in a world where so many people dish out whatever crap they feel like on the internet, and much of the time they don't have anything to back it up with and/or are lying about it, because there is no way for others to prove them wrong. That's the cowards hiding behind the anonymity of the internet. Then again, sadly, there are also people who cling on to their ignorance outside of the internet as well, but they are easier to expose.
Saying you "know" that DmC is not worth supporting isn't knowledge - it's an opinion. You won't support it, fine, your loss. But try and accept that there are people who DO support the game and who wants to get this game. Are they stupid for doing so? Absolutely not.
All in all, it's just a game. It won't save lives, restore world peace or whatever... It's just there for entertainment sake, like all videogames. If you don't like it, don't buy it. It is that simple.

I am getting a bit annoyed now.
1) There are things of DmC that i can judge without having to play the game. One thing that i can´t judge based on trailers and videos is the gameplay. That is something i agree with you that you need to play the game before you can judge the gameplay. Then again i haven´t said that DmC gameplay looks bad, infact i have said that it looks DMC.
2) I say i know DmC isn´t worth supporting because i know WHY i am not supporting it. And it´s not a loss for me if i don´t buy it.
3) I HAVE ALREADY accepted that people will buy DmC and play it. But supporting DmC and buying DmC is two different things. Because to many players buying DmC is just a game to buy. They may not realize by buying the game they are contributing to Capcom/Ninja theory success.
4) I haven´t called anyone stupid for buying DmC. You wanna know why? Because some people on this boards have encouraged me to be more tolerant and not become angry. You may wonder "Why are you angry?" and i will say it´s because i know what i know.
I don´t want to go on about "What i know" because some of it you´ve heard. But ONE thing i can say is that DmC Dante is not DMC Dante. They are two different characters.
Let me remind you of Capcom and Ninja theory´s quote "DmC is a parallel universe to DMC". And if i go on explaining in depth why DmC Dante can´t be Dante it would kill me because i would write to much.
