Alright, I am basically copying this idea from my associate DexterXS over at the IGN boards. Some of you may know him as contributing illustrations to the fics, but anyway.

The idea of this thread is adequately summed up by Dex himself:

"Yes, as usual I want to get the creative juices flowing. Let's be constructive in a way Capcom will never see nor hear about.
Devil May Cry is going to get a total REBOOT. You have no loyalty to the previous canon, universe, mythos, or characters. All you have is the name, and your knowledge of what DMC used to mean. WHAT DO YOU DO?

Comic-book fans, you know what "alternative universe" means. Movie aficionados, you know what it means to have a "fresh start". Look what Nolan did for Batman. You can forget DMC2 like he forgot Forever, forget Nero like he forgot Robin. Try to distance yourself a little from what we already have, that's the fun part. Put a twist on it, see what happens. Or perhaps just cut off some of the atrophied narrative limbs DMC has collected in it's meager lifespan and get back to some nitty gritty... but remember, you have been told to reboot. You can't just make DMC1 again. (More is the pity)"

"If I receive 8 or more SERIOUS reboot concepts, I will decide upon a "winner" and create a piece of artwork to reflect that reboot concept."

--------------------

So, we have about 6 right now over at IGN, which you are welcome to look at. But I'm wondering what you guys here at Org can come up with, and perhaps add to the pool of options for Dex's illustration. Note the reboots already done below so that you don't post duplicates

Dante the Slayer - Khanammar
But as for story... I would have always loved for a storyline in which roles of hero and villain would be reversed. You would play as Demonic champion fighting against the Dante the entire game as a villain in the universe. And although it would have also been kinda trendy... but I always liked the vampire lore. Instead of having Dante a half-demon... have him as a half-vampire like in Blade. And make a combat system that involved using Light as a weapon. With the power of next-gen lighting effects, you can have you sword also act as a reflector to shine them at your vampirical enemies from various sources throughout. You would be able to blast holes in the ceiling exposing sunlight that would give you the raw materials to do your battles. And that whole gameplay aspect could have been expanded by making completely destructable environments that would all affect gameplay... similar to:

Noir Dante - Dex
Devil May Cry set in a stylish Sin-City esque b/w world of 1930's detectives and dames; hot red blood, dark streets and cold smoke. Dante is more of a constantine-esque character, but it injects the OTT DMC world into a period of gritty old cop stories.

Angel May Cry - Dex
Dante isn't half demon, he's half angel. Exact same backstory, save that it was "God" who wanted to "cleanse" the human world and start over. Sparda was a warrior of heaven who objected and saved the humans, betraying "God" etc. etc. It's a bit like recent mediocre-but-hilarious-and-sorta-cool-and-oddly-starstudded movie "Legion". Steps on Bayonetta's toes a bit, but Darksiders did something similar, and it allows some Spawn-esque "heaven is a dick" armageddon storylines to kick in.

Dante 2099
- Dex
Oh woops it just became really obvious I've been playing Shattered Dimensions: But yeah, DMC set in a Bladerunner style future would be kind of cool, if you brought in some aspects like mixing biomechanical technology with demonic power/more ridiculous fire-arms/virtual-reality.. could be really surreal, and I can imagine how easily you could introduce wacky new weapons and mechanics. Last minute idea: demons can only manifest through electrical signals like in pulse, that's how they bridge the gap between realities and open gateways.

Hell on Earth - Dex
Sparda doesn't awake to justice, Mundus is victorious and humanity is enslaved, earth is devastated. Gaping holes to the demon world. In this post apocalyptic hell-on-earth world, Dante is the product of Sparda's raping a human woman. Vergil is born also, but decides to follow in his fathers footsteps (surprise), Sparda having overthrown Mundus to rule the land. Dante grows up planning to get some vengence, halfblood style. Mad Max meets Fallout meets the Wild West, with some midevil stuff in there also.

Sir Dante - Moses
As a counterpoint to 2099 (in which btw the demons could even originate from the deadly Interwebs), we could have Medieval DMC, where the twins were born in the middle ages rather than in modern times. It would be mainly superficial, but I think it would give a chance to face more traditional enemies, like vampires, werewolves, etc. The demons could be figured as fay folk or genii, or something. Something to do with iron as well...and horses...castles and dragons. And dungeons. I'm thinking Germany, Brothers Grimm, Black Forest, Der Erlkonig. And of course, Sparda would be a nobleman who hides a dark secret and there would be other feudal lords looking to move in on his territory. Possible grail legend influences, etc.

Sands May Cry - Moses
Also, something a little wacky, Prince of Persia May Cry. Basically, DMC but with a most Middle Eastern mythological background. Sand, camels, belly dancers! Palm trees, dates, flying carpets! Scimitars and sultans, wow! Yeah, anyway, Sparda is a djinn who rebelled against Shaytan, and was driven into hiding in some crappy town in the desert, and the twins were born. There are other types of djinni, as well as angels and desert spirits. And maybe genies, which should act more like the thing behind Nero and maybe give you Chaos Legion powers, I don't know. I just know, scimitars and camels. Maybe some Sultan is using the power of Shaytan to take over the land, and Dante has to stop him or something.

DMCU/DMC Begins - Aptom
*This is Aptom's reply, you need to go to the thread to see it.*

Don't be shy. I'm sure someone here has had an idea of an alternate universe for DMC.

I like DMC 2099 since i'm into futuristic settings sumwhat. It gives me a Deus Ex/Bladerunner vibe, which i like.

Also ChaosAptom's reboot idea was great. But Capcom would never do a game that like. I think half of his idea would have to be in a sequel.

The problem with that one is that it would be difficult to integrate swords into the story. Noir is all about guns and stuff. Cane swords might work, but still.

Dex still needs a few more entries. Feel free to present your ideas.

Hmm... I'll think more on it in the coming days. ^_^ Is it okay if I use the noir setting for a place to start my thinking? Really like the idea. If not, I totally understand and will think of something else.

Very creative imagination, I'm very glad that you can implement it on the forums and let everyone see!

I don't really get this thread... You dislike this reboot and have mentioned so in numerous threads, and now you talk about having Dante out in space and being half-vampire.

I get that it is from some other thread on some other forum, but why bring it here?

I brought it here to that others could contribute, and also to show that there are many better ways to reboot the franchise more definitively and iconically than the way currently underway.

Again, feel free to contribute whatever ideas you have. We still need a few more entries.

I've got one.

Human May Cry

Hell and Heaven are bent on destroying one another and the universe is thrown into chaos. The human world is affected by war between Angels and Demons. Two heroes each from heaven and hell respectively rebels against their kind but are thwarted by God and the Lord of Darkness. Unknown to the masters of hell and heaven, the two heroes sought humanity as a civilization they wanted to see in their respective worlds. The heroes have a son each with a human. Dante is the half-angel, while Vergil is born half-devil. They are given Devil/Angel Arms to fight for humanity against the armies of darkness and light. Dante and Vergil join forces wielding guns, swords, and chainsaws to fight and protect humanity as well as take down heaven and hell in the process.

Could you detail some of the gameplay implications and practical differences between this game and the original? Dex needs some details beyond story if he is going to draw it.

Not a bad idea though.

I sodding love the Hell on Earth one. If Dante had his DMC 1 personality, I'd buy it straight away. :o Somebody make this game.

What are the rules? Are we allowed to change the genre and gameplay?

If so, the Hell on Earth one with Bethesda's sandbox rpg feel would be just plain awesome to me. But I'm completely biased there. Was crazy about Oblivion and liked Fallout 3 for the similarities.

Hah. Could you imagine a Devil May Cry where you create your own Dante a la Mass Effect? It could even be female. But the only hair colors available would be shades of silver, white and blond. You could buy hair dye or find a stylist (like in Fallout 3) to dye it in game though. And the name would have to stay Dante, though you could give them an alias.

Any reboot is fine. We have another entry from Aptom on the IGN thread, an RPG, so check that out.

I'd say the best bets are changing genre or changing the story somewhat. So you have my Medieval and "Arabian" ideas which are mainly story changes. Then you have genre changes like an RPG or a 2D sidescroller.

The only real guidelines is try not to make it just a continuation of the main series, either in gameplay or in story.

For the most part, that's what "Darksiders" is somewhat-about. Darksiders was pretty well done too, this isn't a bad idea you have but it does seem like the Darksiders plot, half and half. I'd be expecting a plot a little more sophisticated then that from Capcom/Ninja Theory. I'd be pretty angry if it was a simple game in terms of plot and character.

The Sex Pistols May Cry

Dante, a young British man in March of 1979, has finally had it. After a punch in the face to his brother Vergil, as he runs away from home, Dante decides to try out for the newly vaccanted spot of bassist in his favorite band, The Sex Pistols, who recently lost their beloved bassist, Sid Vicious. He makes it in the band with ease, but soon the punk rock band is forced to deal with some "friends" of Dante; the legions of demons still ****ed off at the bassist's dad, Sparda. Join Dante and the Sex Pistols as they quest through out the lands of England, Scotland and Ireland, fighting demons with their band equipment, illegal drugs (including heroin injections into demons' veins) and a bigass sword Dante seems to carry around with him at all times, including the concerts. And will they have to deal with Vergil's rising NWOHM band, Iron Maiden (of which he sings lead vocals)?!

 Sorry, but I couldn't resist. ;) You don't have to take it seriously if you don't want too. ^_^

What kind of game would that be? Guitar Hero?

Nah, it'd be more like Brutal Legend. ^_^ Though a GH mini-game segment could be incorporated for the "Special Edition" ;)
