Devil May Cry Plot

As many of you have seen, many members are having a bit of trouble with the storyline of the games. This can been seen by new threads for Devil May Cry 4, in which people speculate many things, who are a bit weird, considering some facts that happened in the games.

After some talk with Mobfigurz (and thanks for that, a rep+'s coming your way;) ) we concluded that a thread which explains the general plot and stuff in the games should be included.

Please watch for spoilers.

Devil May Cry

Two Milleniums ago a great war happened between the human world and the demon world. The demons were far more powerful than the humans, but then a ray of hope emerged in the form of a different demon, Sparda. Sparda took petty on humans and defeated the demon emperor Mundus, sealing him along with his powers and the rest of the demon world with a spell. And after that he continue to protect the human world until hs death, which earned him the title " Legendary Dark Knight Sparda"

In the game, the protagonist is Dante. A very capable devil hunter who uses a great sword and two handguns. He has his own shop which he calls Devil May Cry. The walls feature many devils destroyed as to show off his skill in handling these kind of special jobs, the ones he does. He has established a password only provided to people who encountered real devils, to avoid being caught in some "boring" ghost huntings.

dmc1dante_2.jpg

One night his shop was attacked by a mysterious young woman who seemed to know all about his past. Apparently Dante is Sparda's son, meaning that he has devil blood running in his veins, and even from when he was a child, he had special powers. Trish apologizes for the attack and admits it was only to test Dante's potential. Mundus, the emperor of the demon world attempts to gain passage to the human world once again and Trish wants Dante's assistance to send Mundus back once and for all. Dante hesitates at first but changed his mind when he saw Trish's face (as she was wearing black glasses all the time) who looks exactly like his dead mother. His mother was killed by demons years ago, and when his brother was lost, he was left with no family at all. So in respect to her having his mother's face he accepts the Mission and goes with Trish to Mallet Island to prevent Mundus' comeback.

Once arriving at a castle in the island, Dante and Trish split up and the game begins.

In the game there are orbs, each one with different needs and powers, necessary to play the game.

Red Orbs: The are the currency of the game. You use them to buy items and moves or unlock special sealed doors.

Yellow Orbs: The revive the player in a safe place just before the place in which he lost.

Blue Orbs: They make your life bar bigger and also heal you. They are usually split in 4 fragments. When you gain all 4 one Blue Orb will successfully be made.

Green Orbs: They heal the player at a random amount of life.

Purple Orbs: They make you Devil Trigger Bar bigger.

Dante proceeds at the 1st Mission in which he encounters Marrionette and Bloody Mari. The usual enemies in the game. After visiting 3,4 places in the castle he finally gets access to the next level.

In the next level Dante gets his new weapon. A Devil Arm Sword named Alastor. Alastor prides itself as being worthy only to powerful adversaries and stabs Dante in the heart. But Dante has extraordinary healing abilities and gets right back to his feet with Alastor on his back. With this sword Dante gets access to new moves and the ability to Devil Trigger. While in Devil Trigger Dante is faster, more powerful, his bullets are enhanced and he heals. Alastor gives you moves of lighting and flying. In this stage Dante also gets his trademark Shotgun. The only weapon along with Ebony & Ivory which can been used in every Devil May Cry game. Dante encounters new Devils, who look like Reapers floating, with the difference of having scissors instead of scythes. Dante defeats them and proceeds to the next level.

In the next mission Dante meets one of Mundus' direct subordinates. Phandom. A large spider whose body is made of rocks and magma and is proficient with fire attacks. Dante mocks him for having a big body and a small mind and the fights ends with Phandom retreating.

In the next Mission Dante searches for a Melancholy Soul, an object that will allow him to visit the basement of the castle. He arrives at a bedroom in which he finally founds it. In the bedroom there is a great mirror and from inside, the image of Dante comes out. Dante is annoyed by the fact that not even there he could relax a bit. The other Dante transforms into a Black Demonic Knight with a huge sword and invites Dante out to the yard where they could have space to battle.

Dante goes and a fierce battle begins. Dante manages to throw Nelo Angelo's sword(that being the name of that devil) but the next moment Dante is unarmed as well. They battle with punches and kicks and soon Nelo Angelo has the upper hand. But before he could beat Dante, Dante's amulet - a memento of his dead mother - showed up. Nelo Angelo screams after seeing it, leaves Dante and disappears.

The next mission is just Dante avoiding and beating enemies trying to get to a certain door as fast as possible.

In the next he finally is in the basement. In there Bug demons lurk but they are no much for Dante. Dante also manages to beat an elite of those Scissors I mentioned earlier who's able to lock you in a weird space while you are fighting. Dante takes another item from the basement and returns to the bedroom to open a secret door.

Notice: In the past stages, Phandom appears throughout the missions while Dante is in small corridors unable to move as he would have wanted. But not one time did Phandom succeed in injuring Dante.

So in the next mission is the final countdown between them. Now the place is as open as it can be. Phandom says that will work to his advantage as he can utilize any fire move he can in order to destroy Dante. Dante is glad to hear it since he was getting tired of Phandom's worthless attempts. Phandom falls from a glass ceiling and gets stabbed in a statue. (The very first statue we see in the game). He admits that Dante is more than just a human and asks for his identity. Dante turns to his real Devil form (not the one he uses when he is on Alastor Devil Trigger) which looks like Sparda's Devil form and Phandom gets scared a lot, before turning to asses. Dante leaves him AND the castle to explore further in Mallet Island. Where Dante beat Phandom we see Trish observing the fight and admiring Dante's amazing power. I think Dante gets his most destructive gun in the game Grenade Gun before the end of the mission as well.

grenadelauncher.jpg

In the next mission Dante is in some kind of ruined place and just wanders. He finds a new Devil Arm. Gauntlets of incredible power, wrapped in hellish flames tried to burn his arms. But Dante overcome that and gained the new Ifrit Devil Arm who gave him access to extremely powerful moves like Inferno.
Dante also meets the successor of Phandom. A new subordinate of Mundus appears under the name of Griffon. He is huge bird with many heads whose wings create powerful waves that hurt Dante from afar. He is also capable of using lighting attacks which he manipulates really well. Dante makes good use of his new Ifrit Gauntlets and his guns to hit Griffon from afar and Griffon retreats. Dante continues the mission and enters into a misty place.

gauntlet.jpg

In the next mission Dante is guided by a mysterious light out of the mist and enters the next stage.

In the next stage he manages to fight his way through some tough enemies and gain some items to open some other gates. But once he takes a grail, Nelo Angelo appears for a rematch. Dante has grown more powerful, while Nelo stayed at the same level and Dante beats him easily.

After that Dante finds a ship, and boards it. I have to mention that this is the only Devil May Cry that has underwater battles. In these Dante is only able to use a new gun he found on the ship, the Needle Gun, which founds 5 needles and is useful only underwater. The game changes into shoot' em up mode only for these circumstances. After he fights a Death Scythe the most powerful of these Scissors/Scythes enemies Dante gets the ship moving. After a while, Griffon appears and using the air from his wings stops the ship from moving and challenges Dante again. Dante uses the terrain of the ship to avoid Griffons new attacks and ultimately causes Griffon to retreat again. Dante enters the captains cabin and ends the mission.

In the next stage Dante takes a useful object from the Captain's cabin but immediately after that the ship starts to sink. Dante swims his way out beating enemies with Needle Gun and reaches the surface thus ending the mission.

The next mission is Dante returning towards the old places, having acquired the item he sought.

After that I'm about to end the space that can be used for each post so I will post the next part in another post.

Continuing

In the next he is back to where he fought Griffon first. But now has items that unlock more doors for him. He gains the last Gun of the Game, the Nightmare-Beta which can be attached to Dantes head and shot multiple laser beams while draining Dante's devil trigger. And also finds a pair of launches which open for him the gate to the Colloseum. In there one must sacrifice something in order to find the Staff of Hermes. The item Dante needs in order to proceed. Griffon appears again and an epic battle begins. Dante and Griffon fight with passion but Dante is far more powerful. Griffon's wing gets cut and he can't fly, but continue to battle. Dante manages to make him lose his senses and then a giant pillar falls on him. Griffon is impressed with Dante's powers and sees in him potential that surpasses Sparda. But wants to continue the fight so he asks power from Mundus. Mundus' sign can be seen in the sky and his voice echoes from the clouds. He doesn't care about Griffon anymore so he destroys him himself, and disappears.

Trish arrives and congratulates Dante on beating Griffon. Dante is disgusted with Mundus and is assured that he is responsible for the death of his mother. He vows to kill Mundus in the name of Sparda. Trish looks at him with a weird look as if he said something irrelevant when he vowed that and left using teleportation via electricity. Dante gets the Staff of Hermes and ends the mission.

griffon2.jpg

In the next mission Dante returns to the castle. But the castle has changed. It is dark and many statues are gone. Places and doors are altered or missing. Dante finds from where Mundus plans to open the Gate to the demon world but he cannot access it as he needs the Philosopher's Stone. Before he can go search for it a new enemy appears. Nightmare. Nightmare is made of rubbish and his core must be awakened through special conditions that must meet in order for Dante to be able to actually hurt him. Nightmare also can transfer Dante to an alternative dimension in which the old bosses are still alive, thus at this encounter Dante fought Phandom again.
After dealing with Nightmare Dante leaves in search of the Stone and enters another part of the castle while ending the mission.

He finds himself absorbed in some weird paintings and gets to different places of the castle. He encounters the 1st Frosts - the enemies that appear on Devil May Cry4 too. Which he beats easily with Ifrit's fire powers.

splash_frost.gif

After that he defeats a "dragon" gains the quicksilver and access to the throne room. It is dark. Outside fierce rain. In the window a dark figure stands, staring in the rain. It is Nelo Angelo. Dante steps forth acknowledging the fact the this is the only Devil he values honor and has guts. "Pretty shame you serve Mundus" he said.
Nelo acknowledges Dante's abilities as well. He uses all of his demonic powers to transform himself differently.
He looked like he had somewhat human face and his powers were so strong that he managed to push Dante just with his aura. Now he has the ability to use some Phandom Swords to attack Dante from a distance. But Dante beats him all the same. After the battle Nelo flies while in pain and disappears. From above an amulet identical to the one Dante's has fell. Dante realizes that he must have killed his own brother. Furthermore a cut-scene shows Trish receiving orders from Mundus to kill Dante as his brother, Vergil, failed and Trish accepts.

23192925_Unmasked.jpg

Dante combines the 2 amulets and creates the Perfect Amulet and then use its power to awaken Force Edge (the sword he starts with)into its true power, the Sparda. The sword Sparda used to defeat Mundus.

9-devilarms-sparda.jpg

He then enters some other paintings and goes through numerous battle, while beating Nightmare (and Griffon inside him) again. After that he goes to another painting and reaches the bedroom once again. He enters the mirror from which Nelo 1st appeared and ended up in an alternative dimension. In there he fights some really tough guys the Nobodies and also gain the Philosopher's Stone And access to the demon world.

In the next mission Dante is in the demon world. He finds a weird room with incantations everywhere but before he has time to examine it Trish asks for help. Before he could reach her Nightmare appears and encloses Dante in a barrier seperating him from Trish. Dante fights Nightmare (and Nelo Angelo again) for a while and before he can get the upper hand Trish electrifies gim from behind. Dante manages to avoid both Trish and Nightmare to destroy him but then he explodes putting Trish in danger. Dante saves her since she looks like his mother but tells her next time they meet will be different.
Mundus also appears when Dante meets and forces Trish to follow a different plan.

Dante in the next mission just tries to find a way to open the door which leads to Mundus and after some hard things he manages to open it.

The next mission is the actual showdown. Mundus and a Sparda fighting again. Strange and ironic it will end the same way. Mundus has imprisoned Trish to affect Dante but it is fake and while Dante has lost his will to fight and Mundus shoots his most powerful beam Trish emerges and gets hit instead. Dante gets angry and along with Mundus they go to space.

Mundus_04pe.jpg

Dante asks Mundus about his mother's death. But Mundus' answer only serve to make him angrier. He transforms in his ultimate form and they fight their epic battle. After a while Mundus manages to sent Dante in a lava place where Dante is in human form again, but can Devil Trigger to Sparda-like form. Mundus faces defeat again and Dante leaves. He cries for Trish's death and for some stupid idiotic reason:)P ) leaves the Sparda sword and the Perfect Amulet with Trish and starts a run to escape the demon world and the Island before it explodes.

Through some explosions he gets himself in the basement of the castle and Mundus reappears for a rematch. Although Mundus looks now like a monster, Dante looks veeery tired and Mundus mocks him. Then Trish arrives and gives him her powers so he sends Mundus back to the demon world, saying as a joke that the next time his son will be here to take care of him.

Trish and Dante seem a bit despaired but then a plane (which can be seen in the 1st mission) falls from the ceiling and they use it to leave. Trish cried before that and Dante as usual told her that Devils Never Cry. Thus changing the name of his shop as well.

Thanks again to Mobfigurz for providing this idea. I hope this can help all of you understand what happened in DMC1;)

Edit: Please share anything you have to make this more complete;)

Also I add that when this game was out for sale, there was a Devil May Cry Novel with the supposed story before the start of the game. However after the release of Devil May Cr3 3: Dante's Awakening it is no longer cannon.
For those who want to know the plot let them take a look there Devil May Cry Novel

Nice Redgrave, but (with me at least) It not that I/we don't understand, it's the fact that capcom has everything screwed up and has like a different story in everygame. Not to mention the mangas, novels, and anime. Everything is just a mess.

That's what I'm trying to do. Say what's canon and what's not;) Of course I cannot do that with the Devil May Cry Anime yet since it just started, but with everything else I'll make it sure everyone has the right picture^_^

Devil May Cry is mostly known for its electrifying combat. Not it's plotlines which are abouts as thin as filleted anchovy.

I think this thread should also feature the plot of Devil May Cry 3 and the SOLID information(confirmed by CAPCOM)we know about Devil May Cry 4 so far. A short summary of the DMC manga won't hurt either;)

And people? The DMC novels are non-canon. I repeat, NON-CANON. Capcom made these two light novels in the Devil May Cry universe written by some idiot named Shinya Goikeda, which were released alongside Devil May Cry and Devil May Cry 2. They wanted the novels to act as preludes, with the epilogue of the novel leading into the opening scene of DMC 1 and 2(in that order). But with the release of DMC 3,they have become incompatible with the plot as they contain many clashing facts with the games, and therefore, are not to be given too much importance.

Which is a shame because it's a great story line. Id say both the combat and the storyline should be recognized all the same.

I've though of those as well. But the threads should be done each in their respective place - DMC3 Forum for DMC3 plot etc.
I will provide some things about the novels too saying that they have no place in the actual story to help them understand them.;)

How. A demon defeats a horde of his own kind impregnates a woman who then gives birth to half-breed sons who try to continue their fathers work. It's hardly convoluted. There is a little bit of scheming in it as well to be fair but I think that more twists. Maybe a couple of acts of betrayal, more characters from different backgrounds, a captive story and more devious villains wouldn't go amiss.

Sounds like a great storyline to me. Id say it's fine just the way it is. Doesn't need much added. Nowadays everything is pretty much the same, dmc however is different.

Yeah well, awesome or not that's it. I hope it helps the newbies who don't know the game. If I have time (and internet connection as yesterday it was down and I couldn't do the other thread:p ) I will do another thread for DMC3 and maybe some others for the novels etc.^_^

I join with you...:) Phantom is cool, but nelo angelo is WAY much cooler...too bad he is gone in DMC and never returns...it really pains me when DMC 4 does not explain it...:( DMC has a good storyline, yet lack of characters...it makes the game a bit of gloomy and not lively...even DMC 4 has more characters...My point is Capcom should make future DMC games with a good story, combat thrillers, more characters, more bosses and more weapons...which makes the game has the lively yet eerie
atmospheric...

Rep + for Tony Redgrave for making a great yet enthusiastic DMC plot...

^ Man i'm lordOfDarkness now (Ryaniel was a way old username), thanks for joining with me Chaos Master (cool username BTW) everybody has a fuss with the unrelated story lines in the games, I however tend to create my own possible theories and write abaout them in my fiction, I explain from Sparda time to Dante present, and Dante in the future, and with my story it relates to the games and adds in detail, for instance there are a group of demon worshippers called the Demonas, they are just human but they were there when Sparda sealed Mundus.

One of the reasons why I loved the first DMC when I was younger was because in some ways it was kind've a romance story. The Scene when Dante talks about "filling her dark soul with light" actually makes sense when you get past the over the top performance because when Trish was a servant to Mundus she never had a moment where she questioned Mundus's orders, She didn't have a sense of right and wrong and falling for Dante and later sacrificing herself for him the first time was her moment of redemption and the realization that she has a choice, she can do good and is more than just a mere puppet to her master. (The Character Hellboy runs parallel's with this too.)
