They say that there is still a few months left of work to do on the game, and the final characters haven't been decided.
Also, they have to find characters that compliment each others moves

Dante's long sword and aerial gunplay give him an interesting mix of range attacks, and his alpha-type assist will instantly remind Marvel veterans of Captain Commando's towering anti-air

I was pretty doubtful about Dante's addition when I sat down with MVC3, but I have to say, of the ten available characters, he became my favorite. Dante has this great attack to counter airborne enemies. He drops to his knees, whips out a guitar, and fires a purple blast of energy straight into the sky. One of Dante's special attacks changes him to his demon form, improving his resistance to damage and greatly upping his attack power. This is a life-saver (literally) when Dante's health bar is down to a sliver. It can bring you back from a loss faster than just about anything else in the MVC3 demo.
