Nah, I'm not saying you should go ahead and program an Operating System. It's just that sometimes, I see people that are new to the franchise, and maybe used to other actions games where enemies attacks are a bit more telegraphed (with flashing visual cues or even a time slowdown), struggling with thinking about their next move fast enough. They get the point of the game is being stylish, they try to come up with cool moves but they just find the combat pace too fast for them to do it quickly enough. In other words, they can't find a wide enough window where they can think about what to do next, ending up stalling and ruining the seemless action they were going for.

It's totally understandable, but before you get too frustrated, know that there are a few lil tricks you can use to slow things down a bit without having to buy time by standing still or running around. Cause that is so unaesthetic, right?
So, let's review these tricks. They are so elementary, you have no idea. Yet so useful to help with that little problem.

Bullet Juggling

Can't get more elementary than this. A lot of enemies can be juggled in the air by simply shooting them with your pistols. It buys you some time, it looks cooler than just standing still waiting for your enemy to fall down, and it does a little bit of extra damage as well, which helps.
While you're juggling, use that time when the enemy stands in the air to think about your next move, but don't take too long or the style meter will go down.

For charcaters who don't have guns, like Vergil, you could perform any launcher, just to keep the enemy airborne.

Long animations

Those are also useful, you can decide about what do to next while they're playing. But make sure they're cancelable, or you're gonna be stuck in it, vulnerable to attacks. For example, in DMC4, you can use Million Stab off of a Stinger, that's perhaps the easiest one to pull off.

Taunting

It's satisfying, it looks cool, buys you time and fills your Devil Trigger and style meter. What else would you want? Just be careful to how the enemies around you will react to it.

Going acrobatic
Why not? Chain your movement options. I dunno, do a left side roll, backflip, and then right side roll, jump over an enemy with Enemy Step, whatever you want. Just like Dante, have fun while in combat, add some visual flare to it, you don't have to attack all the time. Stuff like Enemy Step and side rolling just at the right moment with Nero for example also increase your Devil Trigger and style meter so go for it.

The bottom line is, do whatever you can to avoid awkward pauses during combat just to think ahead, stay active while you process your thoughts, and you're gonna keep it stylish!
