Well if its a pseudo facebook layout, I think its something to spread malware. be careful opening it.

Anything like this I would suggest avoiding opening the link at all costs as its usually spyware, malware or a virus link.

Yeah as others have said, could probably be a virus. The fact he wouldn't tell you makes it seem it that way too.

Quite a lot of the time the person who sent it is unaware of it being sent, the malware/virus spreads to people in their contacts and friends lists and disguises itself as a message.
