I always though that "Devil May Cry" was related to the expression "Devil May Care", that is kinda the attitude Dante has across the games.

I guess it's also from the booklet in DMC1

"rumor says blue blood may be flowing in that guy's body. I tell ya, if he glares at a guy, even the devil may cry"

Because Devil's don't usually cry, it's basically saying Dante is one bad ass mo fo.

It is. It was a play on words that sounded cool. Sorta came from how Dante reacts to things, and from the DMC1 manual talking about how Dante was so ruthless when it came to fighting demons that even the "devil may cry," or something to that effect. Not until later did they actually try to tie it into having symbolism with the story.

"Devil May Cry" itself isn't even really a plothole, since...it's really just a title.
