This is most likely going to be a long post, so by all means feel free to ignore this as someone's opinion on the entire DMC vs. DmC debate, but so you know I do not plan to pick a side, merely say aloud what I have been thinking the past month. Thanks in advance if you read, and no worries if you skip it. This is my first post on this site, but hopefully it won't be the last!
So, thirty four pages. I read a thread on GT that was 34 pages on the tweet that Tameem put out saying that all reviews under 89% weren't legit reviews. This obviously catapulted into a million different areas, but always boiled back down to DMC "fans" bashing and railing against DmC "fans", and vice versa. Some of the most idiotic rhetoric and logical thinking was done on both sides and I found myself feeling sad to be a gamer. I'm not an old man, but I am old enough (28), have a wife and kid, responsibilities and hobbies, and my own personal opinion. A few things have come to mind constantly that I am going to try to address in hopes that someone might feel the same, or at least see that not everyone in this feud is a rambling, incoherent ass hat.
-I see DMC fans constantly saying that MGR will be the true sequal to the DMC franchise. They go on to bash DmC for changing the story, and using horrible writing, and dumbing down the action. I am unfamiliar with the fairness of this, because they use MGR as a fallback. I have played all console MGS games, and enjoyed all. The story was long, convoluted, at times quite trivial, and always following basic themes. It was also about stealth. Albeit MGS4 allowed you to run and gun, stealth was still a fun challenging options. MGR has stealth segments, but there are many areas I have seen where you are forced to fight. Not to mention the voice acting by Boris. Can you possibly have a more stereotypical Russian accent? I hope they give reasons for this, but it won't excuse his cheesy lines. Look to the demo of it for examples.
The glaring hypocrisy of MGR in the argument is that DMC "fans" are up in arms because they changed the DMC formula and took it away from it's foundation of stylish gameplay and Eastern influenced story. MGR is alright though, considering it is completely changing the gameplay and we have no idea how coherent or true to cannon the story will be. I can't help but see that as hypocritical.
-The story is cheesy to some, immature to others, and damaging to DMC canon to others. In DMC3, he rode a missile. He fought an aerial battle with a motorcycle. We were being followed by Jester. This is a tower from Hell and we are being accompanied by a Jester with bells on his hat. DMC1, 2, 4 have their own highs and lows for story, but it was not award winning. DmC swears, and calls itself Shakespearian, and Dante talks like an angry teenager. In DmC, Dante is an angry teenager. I don't know what Happyville family life many people came from, but I swore, and was cocky and never shut up. In this respect I applaud them for capturing the idea and tone and language of a kid. Which brings me to my final point....
-East vs. West. DmC Mundus uses wealth and power to control the world. DMC series has a tower in the middle of a city, that somehow is void of people. DMC1 is a castle in the middle of nowhere. DMC2 is also void of people for the most part. DMC4 is the first DMC I saw a civilization and saw a reason for them to disappear. DmC Mundus uses power and wealth and debt. As an adult, I can see the logic in this. I have bills, I have debt, I have myself in a lot of corporate pockets. Do I get a sword, gun, pitchfork, etc. and storm the gates? No, because I am a rational person, but in the DmC universe, because I have no option, and no means to go about raising hell to take my freedom back. Look at the world today. You take away people's means, and you are helpless nine times out of ten. Look at corporations and brand names. You market it well, and you can enslave people to Coke, to Guess jeans, to McDonalds, to anything as long as it's marketed right. Coka Cola originally was made using cocaine, which addicted people to the beverage. People were helpless to a can of soda. Is the DmC really that hard to imagine based on current world trends?
DMC was much more anime oriented. I don't know correct terms for types of anime, so forgive my ignorance. I've watched anime on and off throughout the years, and can definitely sense trends there. Riding a missile. Jesters. The soap opera story of DMC1. (Dark soul with light, anyone? Cheesy dialogue is only in DmC though) I enjoyed Dante's banter and dialogue for most of DMC1, none of DMC2, parts in DMC3, and half and half for DMC4. I see DmC being no worse or better than the DMC lineage.
-What this boils down to is fans of the East against fans of the West. If I am not mistaken though, East and West are gamers. We turn on our systems and enjoy games, even if not the same games. I do not and have not ever defamed someone or yelled at them for their tastes. I loved Halo until Reach. I loved SF until SF IV, I loved NFS until just after Most Wanted. I loved FF until XI. I don't go and bash those who still care for them, even if the formula changed, sometimes for the worse, other times just different.
Game reviews have bias all the time, that is why we make up our own minds. Journalists are paid off, while some aren't. Stories change, gameplay mechanics change, characters change, and entire series change. Something is always changing, even if minute. So I for one play to buy this game, because I believe the game is different, but won't make me forget the different sense of fun I had with the other DMC games. I will accept the change in direction and take it on its own merits. I will ignore the supposedly easy SSS for combos and just try to make my own style, and not be told by a scoring system that it was easy or hard. I will take all the "**** You's" as a rememberance to being an arrogant teenager.
DmC fans and DMC fans are still fans. Let us and everyone enjoy what they want, or else we will do nothing but confirm to the media ass hats that we are immature, arrogant, petty little **** ants living in some basement reaching for the next Mt. Dew and bag of Doritos.
Thanks guys and gals. Have a good one.
