@Lain What context? Unlike Nero, almost every part in DmC where Dante gets vulgar has no context aside from trying too hard to sound sound edgy. The only instance I can think of where swearing had actual context is when Dante purposefully tries to **** Mundus off.
That was kind of NuDante’s character post giving a shít though to be fair so yeah most things he did was to try to look cool. They didn’t try to make it like he was trying to try to make himself look cool they wanted him to be rebellious, edgy, too try-hardy to look/sound cool. That was kind of the point, y’know.
No, not because it's the classic series. Simply because there is context to it. Come on man, don't make me repeat myself. For example, calling Urizen "son of a bitch" has context, cause he holds a grudge against the guy from the previous encounter, it's not done for the sole and only purpose to sound edgy. Both games have unnecessary swearing but in DMC5 it's at least contextualized most of the time.
If NDante had similar context behind his vulgarity then you wouldn't hear me say a thing. Hell you just heard me acknowledging that one scene where swearing was contextualized in DmC. It doesn't matter who says it in which game, what's important is the context you give it in order to avoid the cringy "F you" challenge effect where it just sounds unintentionally immature, coming out of nowhere with no real reason.
Even the "bigger dick" joke in DmC, as cringy dialogue as it was as well at least had that little needed context to it, it was two brothers showing off that playfulness typical of syblings, where Vergil was joking around with Dante with the buildup of their previous exchange. See, doesn't take a lot but the vast majority of the vulgarity was just cringeworthy tryharding.
Like, I didn't like Dante swearing in the anime either for that exact reason, it's not an opinion I have of DmC exclusively nor is the classic series immune from it so please stop projecting your thoughts towards the general fanbase onto me calling me a hypocrite because of it. I take pride in backing my thoughts with rational points as much as I can so that kind of accusation kinda ticks me off.
But it works in the reboot because of the previous points I made. So yeah they are two separate things but DmC Dante’s character wasn’t really looking for a reason to be swearing outside of just trying to seem cool. Those times when he does is because he is a rebellious, edgy, trying too hard to be cool, punk.
This is post NuDante giving a shít hence why when he swears near the end is when it is more contextualised. He’s matured somewhat at that point and the cursing is more so for an actual reason and not just to be a don’t I look cool jerk.
This is basically just to show some level of growth of Dante as a character going from not caring or giving a crap to actually genuinely being concerned about the problems that he and others around him are facing.
And to me DMC 5 could have toned down on all of those unnecessary curse words thrown in like ”bītch” every other cutscene and twice/three times in each one of those scenes.
That's one way to look at it and interpret it, and if I do, it does make more sense. But somehow, I can't shake the feeling, given the general tone of the game, that it wasn't done intentionally as you claim and that's where all the cringe and awkwardness of it all comes from. Who knows, but that's how it came across as to me personally.
I suppose if you try and look for a reason for anything hard enough you might just find one. But at the same time maybe all of it was just beautifully unintentional. Guess we’ll never know.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I just don't like to be called a hypocrate when my criticism doesn't come from simply it being DmC. It feels kinda disheartening when someone thinks that of you when you always, always go out of your way to back up your opinions with rational and legit reasoning. Ya know.
Like, I don't think you can claim the reasoning I gave for my opinion here is irrational or doesn't follow a sound logic at the very least, even if you think I'm wrong and disagree.
