The rumor came from a casting listing that SPECIFICALLY asked for a black asian minority for the role.
I agree, by the way. The way they've gone out of their way to be extra faithful to the books (which I haven't read) and then to do this cheapens the entire effort in the name of appealing to a bunch of spoiled adult children who throw tantrums when they don't get their way.
I'm kinda ambivalent on stuff like this. For example, I wouldn't mind a black James Bond. If the Bond series was adapted true to the source material, Bond would turn out to be even more of a rapey sadist than he comes off as in the movies. Changing his color is just a small change in a pool of changes.
On the other hand, I'd probably hold back if they went with a black Bruce Wayne, so I kinda get you.
The thing is, Lauren Hissrich DID make the premise of keeping the show faithful to the source material, and that it wouldn't bend to PC culture like this. So not only does this casting decision make no sense on its own aside from dry catering to such audience, but it also defiles its own original intent of respecting the characters depictions from the books.
I mean does her being black/asian do anything to her character? Like if she was irish and there was irish themed mythology in it, it would probably be an issue. But if the race doesn't play a big role in the story, then I'm fine with it.
In the novels the author very specifically describes her as white, ash hair and green eyes (I've been told). She has been established to be that, a common Polish tone and has been established as such in the games. Like Teal said, it'd be like making Bruce Wayne black, or better yet, why not Blade being portrayed by a Mexican, or el Mariachi Chinese? How about letting Wong Fei Hung be a white dude for once?
