Its pretty random. I'd understand it if it was a live action movie and they casted a black actor but its a game. The only story reason i could think of is he had to switch bodies with someone else. Psylocke from the x-men did that a few times. I don't think that's what they are going for tho.

It's weird yes, but I feel like they're simply retconning some things.
I mean there are some elements of the first Novel in there already and the anime really has not many things that are cannon in the games (aside from Lady and Trish being friends/knowing each other)

Probably because they don’t have many black characters in DMC and they wanted to make one - or should I say, make Morrison one - Plus probably because he’s a character that hasn’t actually been in the games before so better to change his skin colour than to change, say, Lucia’s.

So is it legit Morrison? I'd be happy if it was just another mercenary buddy.

backstab at bayonetta?

@LordOfDarkness tbh Lucia could pass for being black. There is a reason why people fancast Rihanna for her.

@Innsmouth it feels like they could have done something more direct for that. Like using Enzo since Enzo popped up in DMC first.

I loved him so much in the anime. Especially whenever he got to poke fun at Dante; his laugh at the end of Death Poker is magical. xD I'm okay with them retconning him for the game, I guess, but I would've preferred if they'd left Morrison, Morrison, and just had this dude be someone else.

blackwashing, lol.. maybe to remind the pitiful DmC fans of phinneas

Capcom is completely soulless and doesn't want to bother creating a genuinely black character, but Bayonetta had Rodin and DmC had Phineas, so they had to jump on the bandwagon but their method was "take a white character and dip him in brown" then act like he was always black and hope no one notices. What, were black people too hard to draw/animate in 2007?

Phineas? What's he got to do with black characters? Sure, the game's weird lightning made it a bit harder to clearly see his skin color but he looks kind of grey mixed with olive. Besides, he's not even close as human looking as Rodin so race talk doesn't really apply to him imo. Rodin is a much better example.

He was voiced by a black man, and IMO he doesn't look like he'd pass as white even without his nonhuman skin tone. He at least passes "enough" as black to get people debating on whether he fits the "Magical Negro" trope. Rodin isn't remotely human either, he was a former angel/currently a demon, and both things look like grotesque monsters 99.9% of the time.

Yeah but we're talking about the characters themselves, not who voiced/mocapped for them. And sure he wouldn't pass as a white guy but my point is, he doesn't pass as any traditional human race group, as I see it. As for Rodin, yes, he's not human but you know what I mean. He was clearly designed after a human black man in his "base" form and unmistakably resembles a typical black which ain't the case for Phineas.
