He had massive wasted potential as a character, but he's still my favorite character in the old series; for the simple reason that he actually reacts to everything around him, and acts more down to earth. He shows surprise, shock, caution, suspicion, anger, cockiness...in a lot of ways, he acts like New Dante before DmC was even a thing. He feels like an actual character, and not a one-note caricature like Dante.

I kind of agree with Wolf, but he also felt a Dante wannabe, just without his charisma nor badassness. For example, almost every time he mocks a boss before the battle begins, or makes a joke, I get the feeling Dante would do it so much better. And in fact, when you face them as him...

But, I'll give him the fact that in HIS case, vulgarity worked, cause it was measured and inserted in the right moments, which made it fun.

^I agree, but I blame the moments of "boss mockery" on the writers' attempts on playing it safe and attempting to make him more like Dante. You could take those moments out, and it would change nothing about Nero's character. They were more or less shoe-horned in (along with amplifications to Nero's design, I'll bet) to stick him closer to Dante.

No, I don't agree. Those moments contribute to establish his personality traits just like everything else. It's through those moments that we see that he's disrespectful, rushy, cocky, arrogant to the point of underestimating his opponents, foul mouthed, and heavily driven by his emotions.
