When judging a videogame, you CANNOT overlook that the most objectively important thing is gameplay, cause we're talking games. You're supposed to PLAY them. And gameplay is their form of expression, what defines them as medium. Not story or anything else.

Is that such a difficult concept to grasp? It's pretty basic.

And Geoff, you're surprising me. You gotta be kidding with your last comment. O.O

Again, you're talking about how much you enjoyed it, not how high the quality of gameplay, or the quality of the story was. And if you could make decisions in the story, guess what, that's actually gameplay. I'll agree though that graphics aren't important; it's more about the atmosphere you're trying to convey.

Last comment was for ef9, of course.

Well, that point about graphics is arguable. I mean, it depends on what the game's about.

I have my opinion and I won't be moved on it , you can't just treat it like what I am saying is ludicrous I play games with crap gameplay because I like another aspect of them which may not always be story either and gameplay isn't my deciding factor in playing it

Even with DMC it was dante who got me interested long before the gameplay and I don't appreciate you making out like I am confused or just outright wrong or stupid , the whole point of opinion is that everyone has a different one so the no no no at the start of the comment wasn't needed

Again ef9, you're talking about what you like, not what is *good*. Nobody's treating you badly here, it's just that what you're saying is rather odd if I were to strip away what you ''like''. Take away what you like and what remains is quality... and you just can't have terrible gameplay with a great story, but still consider it amazing as a game.

I aint saying it's ludicrous man, calm down. Tastes are tastes, and I understand it.
I'm saying what defines videogames as medium is gameplay so that's the most important aspect to consider when judging em.
Then, you can like games for whatever reason, and it's fine, but I'm talking about objectivity here. I know it's unpopular topic, objectivity, cause often goes against our personal preferences, but still.

just to add story descisions are about story there not a gameplay elelment as you simply pick a selection in a number of answers like in mass effect but it is different , there not a gameplay mechanic , since I am on my own on this I will just leave ye too it before I get my head bitten off

If most important thing about a game is gameplay, then why do I find games with good gameplay simply get too boring too fast without a good story? Meanwhile, a great story can make me handle awful gameplay, it becomes something like a treat for the tears and raw fingers.

*sigh* If you can make decisions in the game, that's gameplay. Anything you *do* in the game is gameplay. The story itself cannot be 'played'. You keep talking about your taste, and we understand that your opinion consists of your tastes. But we're not talking about tastes here. It's almost like people have forgotten the meaning of the word 'objective'.
Foxtrot94

Because that's about YOUR tastes, it's not objective. There are people out there who don't enjoy Sergio Leone's movies, yet those are greatly directed films.

But anyway, I guess we should just leave it at that then.

Let's separate our personal tastes from objectivity.

Actually, Daimon, I do think this is something that needs to get more attention in gaming industry. This new trend of making games more cinematic penalizing other important aspects is becoming worrying, tbh. Look at The Order 1886.

Objectively - uninfluenced by emotions. Video games - medium for entertainment, meant to be experienced subjectively. Consequence of this is that there is no unique opinion. I cannot play a game for longer period of time if I do not have a promise of something good to be found out. That makes a game without good story a bad one in my personal opinion, making the first claim not a universal fact.
Foxtrot94
Foxtrot94
That's only one face of the coin, Viper. Every one of us experiences them subjectively but they're still products of an industry, and as such, subject to unbiased and objective judgment about their actual quality.

Besides, to reply to a previous comment, games do come from a science: computer science. Programming, 3D modelling, etc.

Yeah, I agree, Foxtrot. It's kind of annoying to see games like The Order still get decent grades sometimes, even though its gameplay is said to be terrible, and brief. Or that GoT game by Telltale Games that honestly looks like a movie... all you can do in that game is pretty much make decisions and sometimes tilt your stick to the left or right to dodge somebody's attack. Seems really boring gameplay-wise.
