Yeah but I'm not talking about which, between story and gameplay, makes a game better in a comparison. I'm saying, that, when it comes to judge a single videogame on its own, gameplay matters more than story, except in a few genres.
And yes I did say that gameplay > story in every genre, except a few ones. Look my first post in this comment section.
However if between two games, the difference in gameplay quality is noticeable, and the one with worse gameplay has better story, and the one with better gameplay has worse story, the latter is a better game overall.
See, I dunno. I used DMC4 and Bayonetta as an example because they're both inferior and superior in their own ways, yet one is considered better. Which brings me to my next point - let's strip gameplay and story aside, and judge DMC4 and Bayonetta with what they have left. What does Bayonetta have that DMC don't?
Again, I'm not saying a game HAS to only have good gameplay. Read the original post, I said gameplay > story, not good game = only gameplay. Meaning that, aside from certain genres, gameplay is more important than story when judging it, cause of the very nature of this medium. Just that.
I don't remember Bayonetta having such a stellar story. Seemed to be on the same level as games like DMC3 and DMC4: just a simple story that's mostly character-oriented and dialogue-oriented. The reason why people take Bayonetta over DMC4 is because it might even have better gameplay overall. It ticks more boxes, and it has no backtracking like DMC4.
As for the argument, yeah, games need to have good gameplay. If you value story more over gameplay in all video games, then you're not even really a gamer. So many games get away with having mediocre gameplay, but oh the story is just amazing! If everyone thought story is more important than gameplay, we'd end up with sh*tty games. Games like MGR, DMC, DD are excellent games. It's because they have great gameplay.
Even games like Dark Souls (which doesn't have a great story no matter what people say) are famed for being amazing. At no point did I think that was because of its stellar story, because technically it doesn't really have a story: it has nothing (or very little) to do with the player or their character, really. It's just set-dressing. Bloodborne got 9/10 even though story was almost nonexistent and anticlimactic.
I read the op fox and i understand it perfectly but disagree as I have played games with a great story that have had bad gameplay and still liked them a lot because of there story.
ef9, how much you like a game has little to do with how good it is. We're talking about quality, and the most important thing to determine quality in games is gameplay. A lot of people said they liked DmC too, but that doesn't mean it wasn't subpar in terms of gameplay (and possibly even story, certainly the writing).
You can't talk about what is more important in a game objectively, since games are experienced subjectively. You're not a scientist observing someone else doing it, and coming up with a theory based on data gathered from a large number of individuals, you are inside the experience, forming an opinion on yourself alone.
Preference doesn't come into it with games your playing for the first time, I hate the gameplay and look etc of walkimg dead but I loved playing it as I loved alpha protocol due to all the different decisions I could make in story though it played crap and again with spec ops the line and others , and the game quality was poor but I still really enjoyed them so I disagree with what ye are saying
No no no. Every medium has an objective more important aspect(s) to consider when judging the product. For example, cinema has writing and direction. You can't say, for example, that a movie that has bad writing and direction can be considered good because, say, it's got good special effects. You can like it, sure, but objectively that's not what makes a film good.
