And as I said, gameplay is what makes a game a game. Not story. So objectively, THAT is what must be the main thing that needs to be good, when deciding if a game is good or not in the first place.
The new Wolfenstein actually had a pretty good story.
Anyway, I think a good story is required for some games like Point&Clicks and the narratively driven games. For others though, the lack of good gameplay will make it hard to enjoy the story.
Most weaboos would find this to be complete heresy. Proof of concept? Go to....go to any visual novel website, or game forum on Gamefaqs, or go to NeoGaf, and repeat what you've just said.
I suggest you take one of the mods from here, and equip them with a Dyson vacuum. Dust is all that will be left of you. But worry not, Helix Geno will fix you! Dusty!
Tell me, Fox, what is a good gameplay for you? Cause what you excel at, I'm total **** in, and if I'm gonna do something 50-100 times till I finally get through, then there better be something worth doing that and to me that is a good story. Whether it's gameplay<story, or story<gameplay, or story=gameplay, in the end it's all subjective, cause different people look for different things in their entertainment.
That all depends on the game ans the genre, if it is a series you love and are invested in then story is way more important , but if it is a series you love to play for fun then gameplay is more vital
In mgs I prefer story above all else but in ninja gaiden or devil may cry or batman etc I prefer gameplay above all else except maybe the characters themselves
I'm not talking about what people seek. I'm talking about objectivity. What is the thing that makes a game what it is (a game)? The story? No it is not, it is the gameplay, cause PLAYING is what games are made for in the first place, not telling a story. Gameplay is its form of expression, not storytelling. Therefore, that's the thing that is INDISPENSABLE to nail, not story quality.
Take a game with dull story but very fun and thought out gameplay. And another game, with engaging and well written story and a boring chore of a gameplay.
Aside personal preferences, which one is a better videogame, objectively? You really gonna tell me it's the second?
GoW has universally praised hack n' slash gameplay, but a universally panned **** story. Danganronpa has a universally praised story, but practically zero gameplay to speak of. Side by side, Danganronpa altogether blows GoW out of the water.
Never played Danganronpa but since it has "zero gameplay to speak of" and is a visual novel, it's barely a video game then. It might as well have been a novel or a movie.
You never specified genres. :3 And I did say "depends on the games in question." But okay, same genres: DMC4 and Bayonetta. DMC4 has the single most technical robust combat in the stylish action genre, but Bayonetta has the better story and characters - and consequently, is always considered the better of the two.
Gameplay is always the basis for playing games but even fantastic gameplay will not sway me towards a game if it has no story unless it is an arcade game or indie , if the story is crap it puts me off regardless of the gameplay and one example of this is ninja blade , it had decent gameplay but I hared it because the story and characters were crap
