Dear, but you are a very good gameplayer, so it's natural you value gameplay over story.
I'm a lousy gamer. I do not spend my time getting better scores, so story is more important for me.
But if someone can give me both, I would be delighted.
Well, no, there doesn't need to be a good story, if you're talking racing games, puzzlers, sports games, in short, games following a simple formula with quick result. But if you gave people, but most of all casual gamers, anything else, it would get real boring real fast without a good story to keep them motivated. So in my opinion, story = gameplay.
Disagreed, people spent hours in Arcades back in the days. And still do today.
And even today, casual gamers mostly spend lot of time on mobile games (the most prominent scenario in gaming, btw), the vast majority of which have no story whatsoever.
Mobile games are those I said give quick result. I personally find them boring, but that's me. Gaming's changed, all profiles of people are playing now. I'm casual gamer in sense that I'm not that great at playing and will not really lose sleep to get better. I've met plenty of people who are like that, simply doing their best for adventure. But without a good story that adventure is cut short and quickly forgotten.
Take a game with dull story but very fun and thought out gameplay. And another game, with engaging and well written story and a boring chore of a gameplay.
Aside personal preferences, which one is a better videogame, objectively? You really think it's the second?
Also, take games like Wolfenstein. Story is pretty barebones, gameplay is stellar. No one forgets about it. So that point is invalid.
