For me, it was 2005. After that, everything changed: the series changed, the protagonist changed, and the fanbase changed...all successfully managing to get WORSE than before.

Not even close to the difficult situation the franchise is in right now.

On a more "personal" level, I will never forget 2010 though. It was the year I completely dropped my interest in one of my favorite franchises. Never got in touch with anything Devil May Cry related until DmC's release.

DMC4 SE, although not being a new game, is still a little tiny light in the tunnel... that I've been waiting for for 4 years.

Eh, if a remake of a game from a long-dead series is your light then you're far more optimistic than I am. Star Fox 64's 3DS Remake didn't change the fact that the series was still dead...and would continue being dead for 1/2 a decade.
Besides, at least DMC went on hiatus on a high note...I'd rather spend four years playing DMC4 than nine years playing Star Fox Command, the WORST game in the entire series.

A tiny little light I said... and still, you never know. You're seeing that the original series is getting quite a bit of spotlight after all, even outside the gaming industry. I just hope that's some indication.

There are cases of franchises being rebooted drastically and then brought back to the originals titles. PoP's Sands of Time series for example.
