    If you want something to base the dreams off of, there's a game that's a dream emulator. I can give you some youtube links if you want.

    I also had two other ideas following the dreams. He could perhaps create some sort of friend (Kind of imaginary) that comes to him in his dreams. Or he starts writing his dreams down, and can go back to a certain moment in real life through them. Very similar to the Butterfly effect idea.

    Alright. First off, setting, then characters, then plot. A smart thing to do is finish the end of the story first, then make a series of events leading to that ending.
