Wolves are the ancestors of "man's best friend." Obviously before the two became so different from evolution wolves were very close to man. Almost our gaurdians in a sort of early on humans.
Wolves are probably thought of as such because of the bad connotation associated with them. Wolves throughout historical literature have been used as the fowl-est of bad guys. Since they are used so much as antagonizing characters people get tired of them. Or find it odd for them to be good.
