    But the gauge is a level gauge, it also increases when you kill other ships. Reach higher levels and you'll get optional stages such as if you win stage 1 with level 16+ you can play stage 2-C instead of the normal stage 2-A or 2-B and if you win stage 1 with level 24+ you can choose stage 2-D too.
