I'm assuming you're still at the whole Waterway part of the game, your options are fairly limited to bounties from the pub and the Clan Centurio stuff,, ideally, you want to take care of as many of the bounties as possible, mainly because you'll get a couple of useful items, some cash and some experience, as well as quite a nice chunk of Licence Points, which should help you earn more skills and allow you to use different weapons.
Make the monster bounties your priorities, take care of as many as you can, and if you're still not strong enough by that point, head out to the Estersands for a little while and kill things, keep in mind that a minimum level for your first play through for the Waterway is about level 4, try and be above that when you go through.
