PC GAMING: I'm clueless...

I'm clueless.
I know how to do basic things on a computer, but I know little to nothing about how on actually works.

Here's my problem. I'm looking to build a very, very good gaming pc. Here very shortly, I should have around $1,500 USD to play with.

PC GTA V is coming along with the Witcher 3.
Minecraft is sweeter on the PC.
Five Nights at Freddy's too (:'()

But I am completely computer illiterate. I don't know what the RAM does, or what the graphics card does, or what a power supply even is. Coming from a person who has only owned consoles in the past:

I need help.
 
RAM is short for Random Access Memory. Basically, the higher RAM that you have for your PC, the faster your PC performs. For example, faster performance while using several programs at the same time. Read these articles for better understanding on RAM.

Like it's namesake, graphics card is basically a processor that processes and display images on the screen. Good graphics card also allows better performance when playing video games on your PC or other functions. Hardcore PC gamers generally will buy latest graphics card and RAM to play their games smoothly. However, both do not mean anything if the game itself is buggy and have performance issues. Read these articles for better understanding on graphics card.

Power supply generates power to your hard drives, fans, RAM, graphics card etc in your CPU. Read these articles for better understanding on power supply.

Research and spend wisely on computer parts that you need to run a good gaming PC, as many of these computer parts can be expensive. I have seen many cases among my friends that have spent excessive money to buy computer parts just to play games like Crysis and The Witcher 2 smoothly, and ended up not have enough money to buy the games themselves or went broke. The reason I prefer to buy consoles instead of investing my money to PC components is that I do not have to worry that my console will not be able to play the games released for the platform, and I can use the extra money to buy other games or for savings.

I hadn't built one in 9 years so essentially had to re-educate myself. I know what the parts do but so much has changed with the components in that time that research was needed. Lots of guides & YouTube videos out there these days though & parts are cheaper than they were all those years ago too.

PC gaming has become much more user friendly than it was & any advice there are many here who can help just have to ask. My budget is just over $1656 (£1000) so can use some of the suggestions in my thread to get a better idea of the ranges you want to go for.
 
wait..... there is Mincraft on consoles?:eek: how do you play without a mouse? that sounds horrible.

My Step-Son has it on 360 & it's not THAT bad to control to be honest but yeah it's a little more fiddly than mouse/keyboard control as expected. It's coming to PS4 & XB1 soon too but just failed certification on PS4 so likely release will be pushed back on that console. When games have decent control scheme on console they can work decently. I mean I played C&C Tiberium wars on 360 & for a console RTS the controls are decent. Still don't understand why developers don't allow use of USB mouse/keyboards on console. Would make some games so much easier if we had the option, might even use console to browse Internet if that was the case.

playing without a mouse just sounds like a handicap to me,its almost as bad as playing FPS using analog sticks.

Again I can play FPS games on console easily with a controller. Of course they lack the precision of a mouse but I don't feel handicapped as such & I'm an old school FPS PC player too. Yeah it's FAR easier on PC but perfectly playable on consoles when you get used to it.

Agreed. To be honest, the only FPS that I play nowadays is Halo, and Halo is perfectly playable on the microsoft box.

But yeah, Minecraft is a bit offputting on console, but it's managable.

Going to be playing Destiny on my XB1 next which I thought was superb based on Beta. PC release hasn't been announced yet but it will happen I'm sure.

As much **** as I talked about it earlier, I've come to really like what it has to offer.

Or go with Dark Drakan's thread or watch Austin Evan's video about it. For a beginner i recommend buying a packaged PC first. You can change the parts in later years.

That is a good site and I have bookmarked that as they have some good builds for the prices listed on there and the exact thing ive been looking for. Its better to go packaged/prebuilt for first rig even though its more expensive its less of a headache. As you said you can always opt to upgrade a few parts here and there in future should you want to.

Knowing how to build a computer is not relevant to buying and enjoying one. People say "oh you get ripped off" but it's like buying any consumer product, you don't have to be a mechanic to drive a car. Knowing how the basic minimum specs work for gaming is enough, you can learn as you go along anyway.
