Should there be a limit to the fanservice?

Yep, you read the title. The main reason I made this is because of that Mortal Kombat article regarding the "realistic females". http://www.gamespot.com/articles/mortal-kombat-x-female-characters-will-be-more-rea/1100-6425276/

As for me, I say there should be a limit. I keep seeing a lot of boobs flying, asses exposed, and so-called "yoai" men(or some sh!t like that) with their shirts off. I say good on Ed Boon for making that step. I've seen too much of the oversexal crap now. I think there should a bit more realism in some games and less flamboyant crap, or better yet, balance! Something that some games have a hard time keeping up these days. I admit, I was one of those gamers who had a fantasy for half dressed women characters, but now I'm grown and realized this is getting outta hand, and I'm even that much of a gamer anymore.

Compare the early Mortal Kombat games and Tekken to Dead or Alive and (sometimes)Soul Calibur, the first two have a balanced roster with realistically and/or regular dressed characters with some half naked characters from time to time, while the other two have most of the women who are half naked with their breasts bouncing and men who are shirtless all the damn time. That's the main reason why I don't play DOA, even if it has good gameplay.

And before anyone misinterprets me, yes there can be fanservice here and there. Yes, I love to see some asses showing and boobs bouncing, but not to the point where it defines the whole game.

The only games that are honor-bound to limit the fan-service are games attempting to replicate realism. If so, then they should be obligated to show some restraint on unrealistic figures or impractical outfits, or gratuitous nudity (hasn't stopped David Cage from doing it repeatedly in his games, though, and it cripples whatever laughable artistic merit he could've had).

In any other game, however, well---it's up to the creator. I'd just rather it not be anything weird, like underage kids, or anything. That's where I personally draw the line.

TBH I don't really care about "realistic" portrayal of women.. i just don't like the devs pandering me with softcore porn and overly big breasts like eechi anime characters i like sexy female characters as much as the next guy but i don't like it being overdone though i would make an exception for mai shiranui XD

Same goes for all male characters i like buff dudes but i'm sick of everyone having a ripped body..

That video is just more silly than it is sexy. She's just randomly moaning and pressing her body up against the glass. Because that's how women take showers.

You use that as if she's doing something perverted.
Well i just wanted to make a point a better example would be Hitman absolution's slow-mo shower scene.

Heck even in the rest of cutscenes the camera pans towards her ass for no apparent reason and her battle damage actually rips her clothes off like some weird porn game and she moans a lot.. like A LOT.. she moans more than Tomb raider reboot's lara croft.

and she has various fetishized alternate costumes too..If this isn't fan service then i don't know what is.
M-Rated titles are M-Rated for a reason, no one forces you to play them but they're preparing you for what it contains when you do.
Now that's deceiving! it should be rated T as its pandering horny teenagers.
I can't believe they've made one of the best strong female protagonists in gaming into such a mockery... but then again that's what they did to jill valentine too..

I agree with VW. I personally think content like the above is stupid and problematic, but I also understand that I don't have to play games with that kind of crap in them. There are so many games out there that I don't have to play games with sexual content/nudity. Those games aren't for me just as much as Dark Souls isn't for people who require hand holding.

I don't like it when games include the kind of stuff we're talking about. But I also know that anyone has the right to make any game they want, and make it the way they want. But I don't have to play it.

@Meg
Exactly!
Thank you.

What's sad is when you see developers/artists having to defend or worse apologise for creating content that's gets properly rated is made clear to the public of what to expect.
Like if Capcom had to apologised because of ResidentEvil's zombies were too terrifying & someone didn't like it.

I agree there can be too much of whatever HOWEVER people should exercise that option not to purchase something that's offensive to them.

Understand it's rating & the content involved.

And return any product that's not to their liking.
It's almost like people have the right to vote with their wallets or something.

The moment I saw that article my interest in MKX lowered down to the "might buy it used" rating for me.

I'm so god damn sick and tired of games trying to be realistic, the reason why I love MK9 so much is not just because of the amount of boobalicious fan service but because of how over the top it was, the male characters looked like comic book superheroes and so did the female characters and everything was so colorful and a delight to look at, the entire game just screamed Mortal Kombat to me as loud as the MORTAL KOMBAT scream in the very MK theme song, everywhere I looked in that game everything looked like it belonged in a MK game.
I played MKX at the Armageddon Expo last year and as much as I enjoyed playing it, I didn't feel like I was playing a MK game, I didn't like any of the female characters one single bit and didn't play as anyone other than Scorpion most of the time and I didn't even really dig that new Scorpion that much, he was just the only character there I knew how to play as since Smoke still isn't announced.
The game doesn't scream Mortal Kombat to me like MK9 did, none of the levels feel different, they're just brown and grey forest, dark and gritty dock, brown and grey market and dark and gritty snow forest and as I've said in a previous thread even the little things don't feel like Mortal Kombat, but look and feel generic and bland like the health bars and Fatality/FIGHT banners.

As for fanservice in games, developers can make a game that has nothing but T&A and nothing else and I'll happily play it, for example I'm desperate to find a copy of that Onechanbara game, fan service is a gamer seller for me, I'm a perv and proud

There can be a limit in games that require it, like if say Last of Us had Ellie walk around in a bikini with Team Ninja's jiggle physics it would distract from the story, but that's because that game doesn't need it, a game like Mortal Kombat which is about over the top fighting and just kicking as much ass possible in stupid and crazy ways doesn't NEED to be realistic, if it wants to find a balance fine, but removing the fan service from the MK girls has kind of hurt their appeal, when I was at the MK booth in Armageddon hardly anyone picked the female characters, even the girl gamers I played with back then picked that Ferra Torr character half the time and when I played with those same girls back in some MK9 online they were experimenting with the different girls all the time.
Fan service doesn't just give something for the pervs to look at it allows personality and variety for the female characters in a game like this, in MKX they're all the same, realistic and bland.

Something MKX should have done is add the option, like alternate outfits at least, say if Mileena is in MKX and her curves are toned down for their bulls**t realistic goal then add in Mileena's ultra curvy MK9 outfit as a bonus costume and let both sides be happy.

With this announcement it's pretty much guaranteed that Mortal Kombat 9 is still going to be better than MKX.

Stupid thing about complainers in fighting games is that actually it is probably so that in every fighting game there are some things that we don't like. Nobody complains that half of SF cast is racial cliches, so I don't get where the problem is with oversexualized characters of Tekken or SC. There are different characters with different personalities, it doesn't attempts to be realistic. I don't get why people are so afraid of unrealistic games. I mean in game where you have fighting bears and farting dinosaurs, what difference it makes if some girl fights in her swimsuit or latex catsuit?

Wow. I'm surprised even the women here don't mind it huh?

Now...I'm not trying to sound like a feminist here(besides, I personally hate them), but how about if the next DoA gme have all the women dressing half naked and the jiggle physics are OTT? To me, that would throw me off. Sure, I have the option to ignore it, but..I can't say my opinion and go on? Heck, that's my opinion of the whole DoA series and a the only thing I don't like about the Soul Calibur(mainly 4, the rest are fine) series, too much fanservice to the point where it defines the series. Any of yall play the SC series know it doesn't stand for boobs and muscles. It stands for swords, good and evil, and fire and ice. Same goes for Tekken, it doesn't stand lions, tigers, and bears(oooh I'm scared), it stands for fighting tournaments and the devil gene, but thankfully that series doesn't go that far like DoA does.

Besides, I never seen any petitions to get any oversexual games off the market. Not saying there should be some, though.

The only issues when I comes to fan service is when they try to hide the fact that their product is subpar with fan service. A side from that, I don't care if there is T n A in my games as long as it is good and fun to play I'm a okay. Jiggly boobies make me giggle, too. :3

Now only if the a fighting game can give me a female character that can use "Jiggly Booby Punch" then I'll be happy. (≧∇≦*)

*is a feminist* :cautious:

Now when you say you hate feminists, are you referring to what I like to call "Tumblr Feminist," who hate everyone and everything- including themselves- and respond to ignorance by screaming instead of calmly explaining what's up? Or do you hate the feminists that talk about boob physics because-

Boob jiggle in fighting games is really silly because (as a woman) I can tell you right now that having your boobs bounce everywhere is annoying and kinda painful. I had to drive without a bra on once and it was not fun. And that was just driving. Imagine fighting???? :cautious: Heck no. And considering the size of some of these women's boobs and the amount of bouncing they do, boobs basically become another weap- *gets punched by admins*

Yes, that and the ones who desire superiority over the men. Sorry I wasn't being specific enough

Ouch! But I'm glad we at least see eye to eye on the fact that the boob jiggle physics is ridiculous.

You know the ones that notice the jiggling breasts the most are the ones doing the complaining about them.

I mean are you having problems with the imaginary characters or the people who don't mind them, because it seems to me you're more disappointed that more people don't share your tastes.

Well, I'm not. Please don't misinterpret me. I never said anyone who likes those stuff are perverts(that'd also make me sound hypocritical too:tongue:). I just think there's too much of it, that's all.

.
Those women, who under the guise of feminism, think they are superior to men, and think men are what's wrong with the world, are idiotic sexist.

By definition, if you believe in equality for women, you are a feminist. That would make me one as well.

FEMINIST:A feminist generally self-defines as advocating for or supporting the rights and equality of women.
Aren't all that support equality for women feminist.
There is apparently a third wave of feminism popularly called "tumblr feminism" that looks more like being into female supremacy and labeling all men as scum and potential rapists, attacking anyone that dares to disagree with their radical agenda. Since they use the term feminism for themselves and saying anyone against them is against feminism in general, feminism as a whole has got a bad reputation.
