Why should Dante care about humanity or mankind?

Near the beginning of the game when Vergil say's the order is working to help "mankind", to which Dante responds with "What makes you think I give a sh!t?" Which, if you know about his back story, makes sense for him to say. But people gave NT a lot of flack for having Dante say this, so maybe I missed something and there really is a reason as to why he should care but I just can't think of one.
Can you?

(I'm not sure whether or not swearing is tolerated on this site, so I'm going censor myself just in case.)

Through most of the game, Dante does NOT care about humanity indeed. He's only inspired to help Vergil because of his desire to exact revenge on Mundus who killed his mother and imprisoned his father. Kat, her skills and the way how she sacrificed herself made Dante look at humans in a different point of view and I guess he started growing too fond of them, so fond he even labeled himself as their protector by the end of the game.

Seriously, I thought the game itself made that clear.

Exactly. He doesn't care at all at the beginning of the game- why should he after the way he was treated. But the more he learns, the more he interacts with Kat, and sees how humans being enslaved, the more he begins to care and see that the real enemy is the demons.

Dante just needed someone to show him that humanity wasn't so bad, and that humans were just as much victims of demons as he was. He found that in Kat. The more he's with her, the more he opens up and changes is mind.

Actually, there was a scene that NT cut out of the game that someone here found the script for in one of the game's little files.

It turns out the scene with Eva telling him how much she cared for him was actually supposed to have included Sparda. Sparda would tell Dante that he should see humans as like family and help free them.
