In the DMC2 Novel (not based on the DMC2 game), Vergil lead a rebellion against Mundus while he was exiled in some other demonic dimension. So apparently, there are more of them than there were depicted in the games.

He's dead.

He died in that one.

Even if he did die that shouldn't stop from him coming back to life. DMC is more supernatural than science fiction so the boundaries of life and death should be more fluid.

So if you wanted to use him again just bring him back.

Yeah! thanks for your help. I already have an idea!

His body dissipated into blue energy or something. If it was even a fully corporeal form at all.

His soul is probably hanging around somewhere. In the DMCverse demons' souls leave their bodies all the time and end up inhabiting weapons, statues, crystals, and whatever else.

Actually, the most common and backed up theory is that his soul shattered in that explosion. Some of those fragments are what powers the armors in DMC4. Just like they found Yamato in an expedition to hell through the gates they found those fragments. It’s also said that a part of his soul is what caused Nero’s injury to turn his hand.
