A former headmaster who sexually and physically abused boys in a 'reign of terror' was jailed for 21 years yesterday.

Derek Slade's victims had 'lost days of childhood innocence' and become men whose 'lives were seriously damaged', said Judge Peter Fenn during sentencing.

The 61 year old was convicted of beating and sexually assaulting 12 boys aged between eight and thirteen between 1978 and 1983. Detectives found 4,486 child porn images on two external hard drives and data sticks at his home in Burton-On-Trent, Staffordshire. They also discovered essays written in Greek - giving details of the beatings and stories about boys being sexually abused. The self-confessed paedophile graduated from Oxford University with a degree in classics in the 1960s.

The attacks took place at St George's School, which Slade opened in 1978 in Wicklewood, Norfolk, and moved to Great Finborough, Suffolk, in 1980.

In some cases, he would beat the pupils, who were children of service men and women, and rub his victims' genitals under the pretence of comforting them. Slade resigned from the School in 1983 and set up Dalesdown School in Horsham, West Sussex, where he later assaulted pupils.

He was arrested after former pupils complained two years ago. One victim described the assaults as 'reigns of terror'.

Slade admitted assault, indecent assault and child pornography offences. He denied other allegations of assault and indecent assault, but was found guilty by the Ipswich Crown Court. His victims said in a joint statement: 'He stole our childhoods. What should have been the happiest years of our lives were turned into the most fearful.

Derek Slade should never have the opportunity to come in contact with children again.

I think they should of gave him the death sentence, I honestly do. What do you think/feel?

I dunno, 21 years and then an inability to do what he wants to do? Would drive him insane, and he's far more worthy of insanity than he is worthy of death.

Who knows? Maybe he's got a long life, maybe he will live past 100 years old...

Think he should be jailed until he is damned old and sickly, and euthanise him in deathbed. That is my opinion.

It sick, and i'm not surprised about his sentence. The Justice system in the UK is cr@p.
UK doesn't have the death penalty either, which is a shame. I feel it should be brought back. Apparently it infringes the criminals human rights.

Yeah they can find out in prison. Peter Suttcliffe (The Yorkshire ripper) has been attacked lots of times in prison for what he did. Hopefully this guy gets the same deal.

They should have given him a lifetime sentence to jail. That way he never gets out, and he gets his just deserves by becoming somebody (or several somebody's) bitch. The prisoners really ARE cruel and violent to paedophiles and child killers, so imprisoning him already signed his death certificate, imo.

But I say no to death penalty being brought back ever. Human error in the past has had innocent men convicted of crimes they didn't commit. I remember one poor dude was found guilty of killing a family that lived down the street from him. They executed him via electric chair. The next day a guy walked into the police station, admitted to being the murderer, and shat on the police for being dumb *****. The death penalty system was flawed because sometimes the police do get it wrong.

Although I'll admit, if it was one of my babies that suffered under that s.o.b, the police would never find him to arrest him because he'd be in my basement. And that's all I'll say without getting graphic and disturbing.

just send him to my country ( Persia ) here they'll cut his fingers and toes one by one, then one year torture, next gallows for about 12 times. this is the punishment for this type of person in persia.

I don't believe in the death penalty even for the most hideous people. What they deserve is to live in shame, and to be given the opportunity to truly feel for and regret what they have done. Possibly even to work toward being a productive member of society from within prison. But in any case, killing them doesn't achieve anything in my view. They deserve to suffer and learn from their suffering.

(And this coming from someone who knows what it's like to have a close relative murdered.)

My boyfriend however, I know exactly what he would say. "Shoot him." My guy used to work for the police as an intelligence officer and he would describe vaguely to me the sorts of cases and people he would have to profile in work - people who would sit there on park benches exposing themselves to children, and who would do it over and over again even after being arrested and punished, people who'd been tagged for molesting kids or habitually stalking them. When they get release he says, they nearly always go right back out and reoffend. He thinks their brains are just wired that way and they don't think twice about the abuse they are happy to inflict on innocent kids. It's safe to say his job has left him quite bitter and disgusted about these sorts of people.

I can see his point, and how frustrated he is at the fact that he kept having to build cases against these people who were released after a while only to go right back out and do it again. But I still don't think it gives us a right to kill them. We should try studying them, seeing what it is that makes them do this stuff. Maybe there can be a way to stop it. If not, all we will ever be doing is habitually catching and executing child molesters, or locking them up and then releasing them again, without ever knowing much about what compels them to prey on kids and why they won't stop.
