Friendly neighborhood DMC/DmC fan
I have loved this game ever since I first saw the concept for it, when I was younger. I remember watching my friends play DMC, being so excited at the coolness of the protagonist, the level design, the ambiance, hell even the story. When the second released, I remember pouring over storyboards and images, watching the commercials on tv, but at the time i lived in a very...um...religious i guess...home? and so alas, again i missed that boat. A few years later, I got my hands on the third game. On pc. I was blown away by the graphics, the over the top story, the underlying premise about family and being at odds, despite a begrudging loyalty to one another (dante/vergil-lady/arkham) And wondering when the last time a story like that was told in a video game. Then, on my deployment, I got DMC4, and had a blast. The story wasn't steinbeck, but hell it was a DMC game! balls to the wall action and a B-ratedness that kind of undermined 3, but for what it was, to this day I have re-purchased it twice, and own it even now, and anyone who has played it knows that it's still a fun game, and the tweaks they made with Dante and his abilities, the evolution from 3 to 4 involving the style switching and weapon switching made it even more enjoyable the more you got used to it.
When they released the trailer for this reboot in 2010, my first thoughts were as follows:
What game is thi-OMG what?!
don't mistake this for negative. The series HAD grown stale. despite the fun factor, people forgot what made the original so important. it wasn't like any other game on the market at the time. Dante was what you always wanted to be-cocky, funny, a ladies man, but a hero at heart who was not afraid to stand on his own, he had done it his whole life, right?
Then came the reboot, and news flooded in, and i waited with bated breath.
They released the HD collection and I played them each through on SoS, because i liked the challenge, but I also liked the games. Afterwards I experimented with the higher difficulties, bloody palace, etc.
Things I have to say about the reboot, after making sure I learned the Canon, played the originals on varying difficulties, watched the series even, and now joined a forum I read every day?
1: Change is good.
Like other icons portrayed through history, the new Dante portrays a grittier version of the protagonist we all love. In all honesty, were the previous two games a little less campy (3 was still awesome), they may have done better. Even james bond has been played by different people over the years. the coat and hair? He still has a coat, with some red. Not the same as before, but easily as recognizable. The hair? Ok, well that is a bit of a no brainer, but in an origins story, based off a very disorganized canon, who is to say that re-writing the fiction, and trying to make it cohesive can't involve changing the protagonist ever so slightly as to make him look the part? Disillusioned, ****ed of, rebellious youth. No memory of his past, hunted by demons, no real friends, all alone in the world, having to be strong on his own, and he's still young. Hell, I'd smoke. And I'd swear. A lot. I'd fight the way I knew how from having to survive, and if any of you have ever done this, it isn't always as flashy as it could be. But Dante being Dante, being cocky, would get more and more stylish to show off as he realized he could could afford to (being cocky and all).
The rivalry beginning in this game between himself and Vergil is in my opinion at least on par with the original story. Vergil being polar opposite of dante, very much about his own interests, and willing to cut his losses and abandon those who get in his way as it suits him. creating a feud between two brothers who barely know each other, over their own power, and by causing a rift by one brother using the other's naiveté as a tool to cause him to work to the other's agenda? cruel and perfectly suited to vergil. In fact, a better reason for a bitter hate with a touch of remorse between the two, there is none. using one to achieve the other's goals, despite the relationship.
All in all the story here has a lot of promise and I love where it is going. I still love the others as well, but for a darker more realistic take on the protagonist, I think that this is the correct approach, and the idea of fleshing out a defined backstory is grand, and needed.
As for the gameplay, in comparison, I like it. it is as different to the others as four was, and three, and one. retaining the same basic scheme, but changing it up to better suit the game and character, and move set.
I think that this will sit perfectly at the end of my collection, after the first four, to begin the next three if they happen, and best of luck to the developers. I for one think they have done a good job so far, and can't wait to see what's next.
