Manipulation. Information. Gaining control of almost any given situation.
This was the goal of the Ninja. To gain the upper hand and survive by almost any means necessary. While success of the mission was paramount, self-preservation was also very important. Because even if it meant failure, escape could mean another chance to try again.
Vergil is very much a ninja in this regard. Vergil may be able to work from the shadows, but fighting anyone upfront is not an option for him because he cannot risk exposing himself. Therefore, he asks Dante to help him in this regard.
Eventually, Vergil fights out in the open, without his mask, but in the beginning he wasn't able to, due the risks involved.
True, perhaps Vergil was more worried about himself than anyone else. But while he may or may not genuinely care for humanity, concern for them is also evident in his actions because he won't be able to fight the demons anymore if anything happens to him.
Whatever his reasons for saving humanity may be, at least he's on the side of good for the time being.
As for demons being related to the ninja, the second video at 1:15 should show that there was a shrine built in Tokyo (there are several, but you know what I'm getting at) to serve as protection against the demons.
Vergil being raised in this type of environment (wealthy, learning Iai-jutsu and Ju-jutsu (the ninja/samurai martial art) in Japan, living amongst demons) may have corrupted Vergil's natural judgement.
In the end, all we can do it wait and see what his real motives are.
