The whole demons in control thing...

Should the game's social commentary have been more shocking?

I wanted to know if you guys think that DmC should have expanded on the whole issue of demons in control and social commentary. Should it have been more shocking and brutal? If so how do you think it could have been more shocking to the audiences to make them reflect on modern day society?

I think it's fine the way it is, because I'm not sure if I'd want a Devil May Cry game to do some social commentary in a really serious way, that'd feel kinda out of place.
I see where you are coming from :) I myself would have liked them to rip into those people who boast about the amount of alcohol they can take and also would have liked to make those damn 15 yr olds sick to the core with some kind of disturbing scene against underage sex and pregnancies. If there were more DmC games in terms of themes what would you like to see?

I think what they did was fine. Actually, what I saw in the unused dialogue subtitle files from the PC version alluded to some darker things that the demons did...espcially in demon run foster homes. So if they were going to include that stuff, I'm glad they didn't.

DmC did nail the worry about the banks, world debt and how it could enslave people; the cult of celebrity and wanting to look good even using plastic surgery to do it, taking a shot at rality TV with that Devil has talent part, The Order being like Anonymous and Bob's prison for people who spoke out against demons. Actually what was alluded to in the demon prison was pretty brutal too.

Besides, I would think it is shocking to discover your drink is not only controlling you, but is also spiked with demon vomit.

Hm, the things you are suggesting would be pretty interesting to see in a video game, I guess, but nothing I'd like in a DmC, it's a little too serious and problematic.
I'd kinda like them to do something about what was already mentioned in DmC: Popstars. I think it's a bit of a more light hearted topic that could be well done with a Devil May Cry's silliness ^_^

Huh, really that was mentioned? Guess I didn't read it carefully enough...
But tbh I really whish they had included a bit more of that stuff, as Dante's past still remained rather vague...

Very true and I really liked the game pursuing this narrative but I would have liked something more provocative that is presented in such a way that it would change my opinions on something or make me more aware of a growing problem in society. Do you think that this would have been a good idea? If not, why?

I think they did that in a way. Vergil mentions at Lilith's club they dope people up with drink and demon substances...let them get high on alcohol and then they fall victim to demon manipulation.

We already had a disturbing sex scene:lol: I think seeing Mundus go at it with Lilith would be enough to put kids off. Plus seeing that demon baby beat Lilith up from the inside and then rip out of her body was pretty gross.
Besides, having 15 year old underage sex in a game would be illegal. I don't think it's the job of a game to talk about safe sex/ abistinence or teenage pregnancy. DmC is not there to foist moral opinions on its players.

Same here. More demon popstars or some more parody of reality TV. Maybe even the fashion industry and how people go to great lengths to be beautiful and fit the image society dictates. I guess Lilith was a start. She did plastic surgery and looked hideous.

Oooh that's a good idea too! :O It would probably fit rather nicely. I really hope the'll do that in a DmC2, should it ever happen.

I wonder if they acctually CAN do that stuff now considering limbo merged with reality soooo yeah it's a but late

I think they did well, for what a Devil May Cry game is (not being centered on storyline and all).
The only aspect that was never really mentioned in this regard is religion (official religions/creeds as a means to keep masses obedient or something like that, for example. Or fanaticism being demon-controlled... Just examples of how that topic could have been addressed) but I can't really blame NT for that: religion is a most delicate topic, and addressing it just with a mere allusion is not wise, because it could cause quite the serious uproar. All in all, in this case it's good they left the problem of religions out of commission.

Well, it would probably be in plain sight.

I would have loved for the game to go deeper into all spectrums of social commentary. More commentary on "celebs", more commentary on the consequences of horrible banking (instead of just a few posters)...

I'd also have liked it if Dante reflected on his awful throwaway lifestyle from the beginning of the game. When he says to Vergil "Mostly killing demons and gettin' laid" he seems proud of the life he had.

yeah that run the whole demons in control thing people would be like OH MY GOD OH MA GOD MASTER CHEIF SAVE US then cheif or someone else would kill the demon

There were allusions to it though. Bob mentions that church in his news report was called Saint Agreas. That's a demon. So if a church is named after a demon, then humans are worshipping them in some form. Plus Bob says 'Just doin' god's work' and he means Mundus. Then there's his speeches during the prison level where he's talking about 'demonology' and how humans should worship Mundus because he has allowed them to live and how Mundus is god. I think think that's as much as they could get away with without offending.

I think it was fine the way it is. The game obviously doesn't take itself too seriously and really revels in the absurd social satire it establishes. Really pays homage to Devil May Cry as a whole. Seems like the most self aware out of the bunch though. I really think though the better story would have maybe come out of the earlier inception of DmC. It looks like it had done something totally different and I can only imagine how that biker version of Dante would have reflected the actually storyline of that game.

I would have liked a bit more on pop music and modern television, but I enjoyed what we had.
I also loved the signs at the carnival that said, "GLUTTONY IS GOOD!"

Needed some jabs at beiber facebook and the internet

espeically facebook it's not a amazing thing by any definition of the word (i beleive people where brainwashedto like it anyway. i can't see anything really impressive about it, but thats a discussion for another day)
