Chapter XII: The Revelation
Dyshthale looked at the relic in front of her with a dark look. There was more to it than first met the eye, the air around it seemed to become warped and twisted as it reacted under her scrutiny. Chajus was pacing around with his arms behind his back. The outpost, once a place that could have been the embodiment of candour had become a dark enigma. Nightfall came over the forest and lightning lashed the night air as down from the heaven came a fierce deluge.
They settled down for sleep. Chajus concealed the arrow under a spare robe. Their sleeping was intermittent as the anxiety they felt haunted their dreams. Dyshthale once again felt the cold eyes on her. Waking up she sat up with a start and there was L’hargerith his eyes were cold and scrutinising, he smiled a cold smile.
“You!” Dyshthale shouted, the others woke up, seeing the intruder, Chajus ran at L’hargerith but he became rooted to where he was after the second step he took. L’hargerith produced a knife from his robe and took hold of Dyshthale, the knife was dangerously close to her throat. She could feel the cold aura that surrounded the fine of the blade.
“You are all coming with me, if you value the life of your daughter, you will co-operate.” His voice was bereft of any human emotion.
“Why are you doing this?” Ajelya demanded.
“Why? Ha, you seek to make a fool of me, you shall hear soon enough, but not now. We leave in silence. Disobey to your own peril.”
They left the outpost progressed into the labyrinthine woods of Honeybrew in the dead of night. The creatures of the night showed themselves in both majestic and terrifying array. They progressed onwards until they reached a place deep in the woods. It appeared to be an abandoned camp site, a small log fire was in the centre with a dozen or so tents surrounding it. L’hargerith stretched out his free hand and the fire roared to life. The flames went from yellow to blue.
“Chajus, throw the arrow into the flame!” L’hargerith said.
“Why?” Chajus demanded.
“So you and your family will be free to go.”
“Come off it, Lhargerith, we know you’re not going to let us go. Where’s your cousin, where’s Yaela?”
“Right here” Said a voice from the shadows. Yaela emerged from the wood and into plain view.
“So L’hargerith’s the escort guard and you are the executioner.” Chajus said, enraged.
“You still don’t know, do you?” Yaela asked
“Know what?”
“You are to be my victims.”
“Iritha!” Dyshthale shouted
Yaela nodded calmly.
“Chajus and Ajelya, you have a perceptive daughter but perception alone is not enough to stop this storm.
“We’re not dying here!” Chajus shouted.
“No, you’re not going to die. What you will be… is ruined; your lives will serve to empower O’jna the villain. In other words, you will be subjected to anguish beyond anything your worst nightmares could ever conjure up.”
“O’jna?” Dyshthale asked.
“Yes, the spirit of Yujna now inhabits the body of O’rhochi. There is no stopping such a powerful destructive force, for you at least.”
“You will be free to go but your paths will be shackled to the path I have intended for you. Now, Chajus complete the failure of The Order of The Magi by casting the arrow of purification into the flames.”
“Or else?” Chajus demanded
“Or else L’hargerith will cut your daughter’s throat. What will you do, save your daughter or try in vain for humanity’s redemption.”
“Throw the arrow!” The voice was that of Endrynash.
“Endrynash!” Iritha cried “You’re alive?”
“And well thank you. Now Chajus throw the arrow”
“Chajus, threw the arrow but no sooner had it touched the flames than a brilliant azure light pillar sprung to the heavens and out emerged Endrynash holding two arrows of purification.
“How is this possible?” Iritha demanded.
“Luck seemed to favour me. Using the power of the order released the arrow from its confines in the shadow realm. From there I stayed here waiting for the other arrow to resonate with this one. The storm of tonight was caused because you were unknowingly all in the shadow realm. The resonating arrows purified the foul shadow and now I am free, you have no place here Iritha!” And with that he threw the arrows at her, one after the other. The first arrow pierced Iritha’s throat, the other sunk into her left shoulder. Staggering back in shock, Iritha vanished. Seeing this, L’hargerith fled. It was evident he feared Endrynash’s power
“Is she dead?” Asked Chajus
“No, she can’t be.” Endrynash replied.
“Why not?” Dyshthale demanded.
“O’jna still exists, therefore her foul conspiracy still lives, and so does she.”
“Endrynash, if we were all in the shadow realm, how was it that we could not see you and how was Iritha unaware of it?”
“You couldn’t see me because we were on separate parts of the realm, similarly, if we were on the far sides of Honeybrew, you wouldn’t see me either. Iritha was unaware of the realm she was in because at night the shadows and the real world are completely indistinguishable. You can’t see your shadow at night, the same principle applies.”
“But you were right next to where we were.”
“No, not next to, I was on top of where you were. The arrow Chajus had to hand broke the seal of the shadow world when it reacted with the arrow I had released.”
“Can we at least rest a while now?” Asked Dyshthale.
“You knew it was L’hargerith, didn’t you?” Endrynash asked her.
“I have felt a very cold gaze upon me recently; I didn’t know it was him at first.”
“Never mind, you’ll know everything for the next encounter.”
“You mean, we’ll come across him again?” Ajelya asked worriedly.
“Definitely, he has tried hard to supplant me for a long time; I didn’t think he would sink to such depths to do it though. It is unthinkable that he won’t hinder us again. Fortunately, hindering is all he can do, his powers are not yet enough to stop me, that was why he fled. O’jna however will be altogether different scenario. Yugna’s spirit is ferocious and unrelenting. On top of this, O’rhochi’s skill with both blade and magic are very formidable. We should head to Ilksei, the land of the Ysevtin”
“Ilksei, what’s there?” Chajus asked.
“Remember I told you about the Ysecryst. Well, we weren’t actually able to destroy it. That was why we had to systematically execute them. Destroying it would have killed them all instantaneously.”
“So you think we could destroy it now?” Dyshthale asked.
“I think you can.” Endrynash replied
“How?” Dyshthale asked.
“I need you to recall and write down your dreams from now on. The cold glare should leave now that L’hargerith will be loathed to risk an encounter with me. What takes its place will no doubt provide a key leading to its destruction.”
“So you think…?”
“No, I know, you, Dyshthale are beyond perceptive. Your unconscious self unlocks a power most useful, a glance at Iritha’s mind. This is not to be confused with precognition, you see the future as she would have it, but, as we can be aware of what she is planning, we can put a stop to it, therefore it is not precognition. Precognition is predicting the actual future, a gift that is very rare, even among deities.”
“It’s still a long way to Ilksei and I don’t want my daughter to be put in danger” Ajelya said.
“I can’t make any promises except I will protect you all with my life.” Endrynash replied.
“We can stock our provisions back at the outpost.” Chajus said.
“So it’s settled then.” Responded Endrynash.
“I hope this will work.” Dyshthale sighed.
