I'm sorry, but Izaya sounds like a total Gary Sue. He might as well be a cybernetic ninja dinosaur hunter. It's like the male version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. (A bi-sexual martial arts expert/hacker/top investigator/semi-genius even though she's not a private eye)
Anyone with that many skills cannot be created with any actual in-depth characterization in mind, since any of that person's flaws merely serve to make him look better (i.e. Dr. House)
Look, I'm not hating on Izaya or Dante, but Izaya seems to be "perfect" for today's cynical audience. Dante, on the other hand, has genuine flaws, has made mistakes that he's regretted, and more or less is frustrated with the way his life is going and just wants to be left alone and live his own life.
Neither one is emo, but they are comparable to each other. However, I will stress that they are only on a surface level, seeing as how Dante would go out of his way to kill anyone who has made another person's life more difficult, or has convinced them to commit suicide. This is proven when he knocks the can out of the fat guy's hand. I think he genuinely cares. If nothing else, he can serve as an anti-Izaya, if you can understand my meaning.
I'm sorry for "trolling" against Izaya. I just have something against characters who are....too...."entertaining" (in a false way) for a lack of a better word.
It's just that I've seen this in both Daisuke Nagase and Akihiko Sanada. Both are tough athletes, but are shy around girls. I know that there are plenty of athletes out there that are like this, but there's more to
those individuals than those traits; whereas Daisuke and Akihiko can be more or less interchangable.
Once again, sorry for going off-topic, but a previous experience prompted me to do this. A person I know said that he was "role-playing" a character who was athletic (**snrrrrkkk**) and shy around girls. So, I called him out on it. I asked him, "So, what's his last name?" Of course, he didn't have an answer. Not surprisingly, this same person looooooves Izaya and Durarara in general.
Look, it's just that whenever I see a character like this, or like the flawed, but still lovable jerk archetypes on any medium (anime or otherwise) I start developing the worst migraines and must stop my hands from wrapping around my neck in an attempt to relieve myself of this earthly plane that allows said archetypes to exist.
EDIT: I've watched Durarara, and I didn't like Izaya. But I do see why he's at least
comparable to Dante. And why Shizuo is comparable to Vergil.
EDIT 2: I actually know of someone who does have a lot of skills. He was a cop, an undercover agent, a swat team member, an author, and is now a lawyer. Yes, he is exceptionally talented, but,
that being said, those skills took
decades to develop. He's middle-aged leaning towards elderly now.
No, I don't know him or am related to him. No, he's not my lawyer either and no, I'm not advertizing for his firm. I couldn't afford him anyway since he's freakin' Matt Murdock.
This isn't like tv (numbe3rs, Castle, Bones, Mentalist, Lie to Me, etc.) where the person is in their late twenties and has already learned several skills. Realistically,
anything like this takes close to an eternity to develop. Just letting you know.
