Not A Big Fan Of The Orb Designs

but something about the way they were in 4

Made 'em damn near useless.

Also, when I think of DmC Orbs, I think of this face...

How so? (Not arguing, just curious).

Well, they used to be an item you coveted, because they were essentially both your survival (items) and power (abilities). Once they gave us Proud Souls, it made it easy to get an Eric Crap-ton of Red Orbs and never really burn through them.

DmC's White Orbs were an interesting variation on the old system (where stuff is more expensive the more you purchase), where they built up and became an upgrade token, and the more tokens you had/used, the longer it would take to build up another. However, they also made Red Orbs useless after a while.

Yeah, but there is more than that. The way they bounced, the reflection, the textures, it just made them seem so toy like.

RED ORBS IN HIGH DEFINITION~ :D

Ah, I kind of wondered if that's what you meant. Yeah, I agree, there; if they had made them as difficult to collect as they did in the previous games, then the Proud Souls wouldn't have been such a bad thing; but with how easy red orbs are to find in DMC4? Well, both items wind up being useless, particularly once you unlock all of Nero's and Dante's abilities (which took me only until part way through SOS mode-being the second time I played through the game).

But on the other hand, I spend a lot of time still collecting the orbs, since I have yet to beat Hell and Hell mode...and well, let's just say I'm buying up Holy Waters (and also aiming to get the Item Collector achievement, lol). So I guess as far as replay value, they're not completely useless...just not as important as they once were.

I'd actually like for them to maybe move away from a currency system.

If the next DmC were to be openworldish, it would be something new to maybe have new moves/upgrades as something thing that you find or maybe achieve/earn after a mission.

I don't think I'd like that. One of the things I hate the most in games is having to make considerable progress in order to get a specific ability. I've been okay with the orb system since it works well enough, and is tied to the Style rank mechanics which help emphasize better play, but Devil May Cry was also an awesome the games were essentially built from a point of the player having everything, and then taking it away and making them earn it via the orb and Style ranking system.

Hm, you are incredibly right.

Hard to say though, I would however like to see something new added in...

I personally would very much like a Metroidvania; you could find all the upgrades in various hidden places within the maze and get rid of the outdated orb system altogether in one fell swoop.

Then what about the Style ranking system? It's entire existence is solely based on giving you more orbs for doing well in battle. Don't tell me after the years of complaints about DmC's lenient Style ranking is all for naught :p

Hah.

[TBH, I actually hadn't known that you responded to my post until just now.]

Anyway, to me, the Style System was more about your commentary in combat (akin to the Dark Prince aka Sand Prince criticizing you in battle only less clever) and boosting your score for a higher ranking at the end of a mission in order to get an SSS grade.
I never really thought of it as a farming tool unless I had to replay certain parts in order to get the most orbs because my obsessive/compulsiveness forced me into getting the highest number; I don't usually do that, but it was "within reach" so I decided to go for it.

I always thought that if they're going to fly right at you anyway and they're not actual items that you pick up, they shouldn't really be visible on the field.

It's like they're just extra animations and assets that takes up RAM and processing after you kill the enemy.

It could just be like Proud Soul on DMC4.
You don't see it but you accumulate it.

Sidenote, I'd totally eat DMC Orb Gummy Snacks...
....

Why isn't this a thing? There are red, green, white, and blue, how much more do you need?

It's there. The second time you play a mission you get a style points meter under the style meter that lets you know how many you've earned.

Personally, I never payed attention to it. It doesn't matter how well I do in a level in DMC4, if I don't find all the orbs I don't SSS. Well, that's bull#!% and I refuse to do something so trivial as that to get that SSS rank.

I mean as a physical pickup item.

Proud Souls is more or less "Experience Points".

About the need to pick up 100% Red Orbs to get S rank in DMC4, they kinda made it so that you only need to get collectibles once in DmC.

It sucks that in both fight against Dante in DMC4, you need to dodge him while breaking up the chairs and furniture to get Red Orbs for that 100% collection...
Most of the time, the camera is uncooperative.

Yeah, I don't think we like that.

Not one of my favorite parts of the game, ether. I found that choice just as head bangging as the 'get the orbs every visit' but in the opposite side of the spectrum. I think they should've done the exact opposite. Rather than give you a free bunch of points for finding them all once it should've been a deduction for incompletion. If you don't have %100 collectibles on a stage you get deducted the percents for that criteria, if you have 'em all you get no bonus but also no deduction.

I think Yahtzee from Zero Punctuation in his DMC4 review (at the end) said that you could achieve the same satisfaction of dmc4's combat via making bugs fight and then pouring fruit snacks all over the victor.

That last bit always cracks me up.
