"My name is Vergil..."

Dante's twin brother... His name is Vergil. But you know that... don't you?
Why do I make a thread about that? Because I see time and time again people writing Virgil instead of Vergil. It's a common mistake, since Vergil is based on The Prophet Virgil from "The Divine Comedy: Dante's Inferno".

But is that the reason why some people spell his name Virgil? Is it because you don't know it is with an e? Sometimes I see the same guy on this forum switch between the two in the same post! Is it just laziness or are you writing too fast so you simply don't notice it?

Yeah, it's kinda the spelling-nazi in me that is peeking its head forth here... I just wonder why there are people who cannot spell Vergil's name correctly.

No offense, but I also dislike "Virgil" because it's just too close to "Virgin" (they probably mean the same thing in Latin though, so the point it moot). However, when spelled as "Vergil" (which is an "official misspelling" of the name), it just looks better, overall.

Latin for virgin is Virgo/virginis. Thankfully, that has nothing to do with Virgil/Vergil. ^_^

So . . . DmC Vergil's not a virgin? The only girl we know that he had relations with is Kat. Let's see, pimp-stick sword, derby hat, funky, blue gloves and pants. Yep, DmC Vergil is indeed a pimp.

And we all know DMC Vergil definitely got it on sometime, otherwise how would Nero have existed?

I'm really not sure if he has been with women before....except kissing Kat. I meant more that his name has nothing to do with virgins as stated by Downfall.
Maybe he has been with other women, but he strikes me as a guy who puts work first. I mean, his main thing was working with computers and hacking deep underground in the city.
Like that kind of stereotype guy who spends more time in a basement on a computer than with women.
Then when he does have feelings for Kat, he gets rid of them because it would ruin his plans if he was unable to use her as he saw fit.

But yeah, he does look like a pimp. :lol:

Didn't someone find/make an image of when Vergil stops Kat from talking, the captions read something like "Keeping them hoes in line" or something? Hopefully we can get a pimp outfit for Vergil in Vergil's Downfall.

"A Pimp Named Vergil, like a Tribe Called Quest. You say the whole damn thing!"

Well certainly not at nine years old did Vergil unleash "the little devil", so how did Nero exist? Some other demon/human hybriding or another bloodline of Sparda as suggested by the game. Plus we've seen in expanded materials that Vergil's got little to no interest in human women, and he has so many other concerns that I wouldn't be surprised if he's cut out his own libido to remove the hormonal distractions.

Maybe in English it became Virgil, but the original name of the poet was Publius VErgilius Maro, so, yeah, VErgil is better. ^_^ And it sounds better to me, but maybe I'm just biased in my accent.

It bugs the crap out of me (actually it totally p***es me off) that when talking about DMC or DmC someone will spell Vergil 'Virgil'. Everywhere you look it's spelt VERGIL... why do you have to spell it VIRGIL?! GRRRRRRAWR!!!!!!!

*(I know there was a Virgil in the Thunderbirds tv show/2004 movie)

Actually, the original latin spelling IS "Virgilius", VErgil is the modification. However, It is still that in DMC, his name is VErgil, not VIrgil. So spelling Verg's name as "Virgil" when talking DMC is wrong. :3

I was pretty sure it was Vergilius... Or maybe those two versions are both acceptable? Gotta find out...

The original poem Divine Comedy says, in italian, the Roman poet as "Virgil" and it's also how it was translated into English. So Vergil is a "corruption" of sorts to the original Latin name. ~shrugs~

Believe me, I know. I'm Italian.:p (and I love the Divine Comedy)
(Dante Alighieri says: "Or se' tu quel Virgilio e quella fonte...".)

Still, I took Latin classes, and I had the impression that in Latin it was Vergilius. Many words had changed a lot from Latin to Italian... and this is quite noticeable, because in Italian (and in Latin), pronunciation changes deeply from Vergilius to Virigilius/Virgilio.
However, I did some research, and I can say that both versions are legitimate in Latin (though Wikipedia calls him Vergilius...):
http://penelope.uchicago.edu/Thayer/L/Roman/Texts/Macrobius/Saturnalia/3*.html -> for Virgilius
http://www.latin.it/autore/velleio/historiae_romanae/!02!liber_posterior -> for Vergilius
(you should use ctrl+F to search...)
Vergilius.jpg

It is probable that the first version was Vergilius and it became corrupted later in Virgilius (I think this because, in Italian, many "E"s became "I"s with time).
