Mission ranks: too easy?

I'm still during my first run on this game, which is on Devil Hunter (matter of principle as I always play a new game on medium first, no matter what). Now, I know DmC is considered easier than previous entires, so I'm not that surprised that I'm getting S+ ranks of every mission so far.

My concern is, is it really this easy to get a very high rank on mission overall on all difficulties, included SoS and DMD? Does it mean that the challenge of replaying a mission to get a higher overall is gone?

Well on Dante Must Die, the game is pretty challenging, but as it is right now, the scoring system is pretty generous. That doesn't mean you can't compete to get higher scores on the leaderboards and stuff.

Nephilim is the standard Devil Hunter of old DMCs. In other words, Nephilim is DmC's normal difficulty.

Well, DMC3 had some very punishing mission rankings since it took into account all the damage you got in the mission and each item used besides the usual style points, time and total of red orbs.
So I used to have a lot of "B"s in it before I came to play it again one or two years later with a different mentality, and got the hang of the combat.

As for DMC4, the mission ranking got more "fair", no longer punishing you for damage and items used, instead adopting the bonus and pentaltys system. In my first playthrough to it I was no longer amateur of course, but had some rust, and even still most of my mission rankings were "A"s, with quite a few "S"s in it.

Now in DmC, you have to take into account that besides the traditional D/C/B/A/S mission ranks, you've got the additional SS and SSS rankings, and the "red orbs" factor is gone in favor of an "completion" factor that once in 100% will permanently award you a SSS rank multiplier.

So, you could say that now in DmC, having an "A" rank is not so good as it was, since now is not one rank away from the best, but three.

In short, S rank is the new B, SS is the new A, and SSS is the new S.
Getting an A rank is really not a big deal, and going with a B/C/D means you did more than something very very wrong in that mission.

it just doesn't destroy your score anymore like in bayonetta and old dmc, if the old dmc had a conscience and could talk this is what i imagine it would sound like
-"oh YEAH look at those styles points, badass, completed a lot of **** too, looks like this deserves an A-.....wait, WHAT'S THIS??? DIED ONCE????????????/ ARE YOU ****ING KIDDING ME, THIS BITCH GETS A CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC FOR i'm a **** who died once as if that wave of ten shadow cats was really THAT difficult, noob, what do you think this is, better nut or shut up kid because the next level has a dante and vergil boss fight where they are both against you and both are in constant devil trigger, you even take damage once and i'll revoke your score to Z! YOU GOT THAT?!!!!!"
and this is my response, i leave the room, slowly close the door, and do this

Oh, I'm aware of that. Even now I'm not finding the game that easy either. My issue is just with the scoring system, which seems to be very broken by giving you what seems to be too much.

It's easy to get SS and SSS even on SoS for me, but that's mostly due to skill and familiarity with the game. I've seen average players getting A and S usually.

Hmm, that's an interesting way to put it. I guess I'll have to train my eye to see Bs instead of Ss then, haha.

it relies on the style points to give your score. me personally, if i die, lose lots of health or get hit too often i dont feel i deserve anything higher than a B or A but when i faced vergil on HaH i died 29 times (seriously) and still got a SS soooo yea...

I've never S'ed a mission on any DMC with out time and effort, nether of which are necessary anymore.

I think it's better this way. Do you think that just because they are called achievements that people should have to put an effort to get them? To achieve anything shouldn't have to take effort, they should be give away, just because someone is better at a game that me it shouldn't mean that I don't get to reap the same benefits as them. In this case, too. Think about how many people actually Platinum any given title, the percentage is minuscule, I myself have only ever Platinumed one game. That's not fair, I paid for it I should get the trophies.

There's a sense of accomplishment to score a SSS on a mission, but now? You can get that same satisfaction without having to work as ridiculousness hard for it. Think about it, if not everyone can do it then they'll just get tired and quit and the game will suffer in the long run. Every game should reduce their difficulty so that anyone can do well on it, it's for the sales. This whole 'only the elite can get these scores' is BS and I, for one, am glad I don't have work hard to do just as well.

Sarcasm aside an easier game has both drawbacks and benefits as an entree point into the series. While it's gotten to the point where you have to screw up pretty badly to score poorly it's a way to train for the more challenging titles and while in this particular dog show the only thing your pup has to do score big is to get lots of style points and not die it will encourage you to try out other competitions where your ugly mutt will actually have to show something more impressive to earn that gold as opposed to other competitions where everyone's a winner, 'cause as we all know, those are for the kiddies. So, is that bad? Yeah, but it's also a good thing.

And, yes, that is how I see this game's take on difficulty, with an everyone's a winner attitude and everything that that entails.

I can safely say if you get 100% collectibles on every mission you'll have a hard time getting below S.

It's far too generous, you can die and STILL get an SS, that's just ridiculous. I guess it's better than Bayonetta's mission ranking that never fails to tell you your ****, lol.
In DMC4 you could use as many items you like, use a gold orb and STILL get an 'A' rank, so I don't see your point.

In DMC4, you could use gold orbs, 50 items, 5 continues, and still get an S.

Still DmC is much easier scoring. On my first run through on DMD I got 14 SSS first time, the others being SS. It's stupidly easy. Saying that, in DMC4 you could S a mission without even using the left analog stick during combat.

whats the point of bringing DMC4 into this? I actually dont remember that DMC4 was THAT easy to S. i love DmC and all but the very least they could do is have each death drop your rank by one. Or penalize you for losing too much health or something.

I didn't "bring" dmc4 into this, I was responding to a post. And I am pretty sure when people say achieving S is too easy, they are comparing it to past DMC games.

And yes, DMC4 IS THAT EASY to S.

I talked about it mostly because the mission ranking system of DmC works based on the mission ranking system of DMC4, only with two more rank's added and the "completion" rank instead of the red orbs count.

I can't really say if the "death" penalty on DMC4 is that much worse than in DmC, since it will only count IF you used any gold orbs at all, and not each time you used it, and at least for my case, if you're not going to use a gold orb you might just as well retry the whole mission again instead of using a continue, which kept most of my rankings an 'A' or 'S'.

And like I said before, the S rank in DmC is the same as a B, so you can only brag about 'S' ranking all the missions if you're on a 'SSS' spree with your mission rankings.

Speak for yourself, douche. You're on Devil Hunter difficulty for Pete's sakes.
I've only managed to get an SSS ranking once thus far on Nephilim and it was during home truths. My other rankings are SS, S and A.
SoS and DMD are HELL because now the enemies run berserk once you whittle down their troops a bit.
You want a challenge? Try beating the secret mission Shenanigans, it's on Devil's Dalliance and you need an Ivory key to open the door.
