Misogyny and The Devil May Cry

I've never been a big fan of The Devil May Cry games, least of all after catching wind of its leather clad, oedipal love interest. Many (white, male) gamers have told me that the story was never the point of the games, which is why this new reboot which so many insist tells a much better story caught my eye. Instead, all I found upon renting this abomination was more of the same sexist dreck. Not a single POC appears at any point in the game, but that's a whole other kettle of fish; for now I wish to focus specifically on The Devil May Cry's portrayal of women.

We first meet our highly original white heterosexual male protagonist with an enormous red flag, as strippers clad in angel costume gyrate and dance for his amusement; before being lead back to his disgusting, trashy trailer for a threesome. Don't worry male gamers! You're not playing some wimpy loser, just look at what a stud he is!

Shortly after, we are introduced to the phallocentric imagery that will dominate this game when Dante's tattoo (a "sword" aka "penis" penetrating an orb) glows. This same tattoo will later cast a magical spell summoning a real "sword", on top of our "hero" acquiring a pair of pistols to round out his arsenal of mighty cock stand-ins.

Speaking of cocks, we have our first glimpse of the game's leading lady as she is assaulted by our illustrious hero stepping out naked in broad daylight. Just in case you were not yet conviced of Dante's awe inspiring masculinity. For reasons I cannot begin to understand, she still chooses to warn this clown of an impending monster attack, kicking off the tutorial level of the game.

After a short platforming segment Dante catches up with the woman who placed herself at personal risk to warn of the impending attack. Our brave and valiant protagonist does what any rational man would do, drawing his guns and inquiring what will happen if he shoots her. Our hero, everyone! Putting women who dare to speak before spoken to in their place.

DmC-Kat-header-530x2981.jpg

The character of Kat doesn't fare much better anywhere else in the game, however. Even in the promotional splash images she isn't allowed the dynamic action poses of her male counterparts. No, she has to be flashing cleavage and some bare leg, in a childlike, vulnerable pose. How else would male gamers want to protect her if she weren't a dainty, sexy, defenseless little doll?

The problematic elements of this character ramp up over time; she even comes complete with the standard Strong Female Character™ backstory in which she explains how she was raped every night until a big, powerful man came to her rescue. While Dante and his brother exhibit extraordinary magical powers and physical ability, Kat is relegated to their human taxi service. Using magic apparently fueled by her performing sexual acts on squirrels (see, its funny because a woman is being humiliated) she can create portals to and from the Limbo world so the big manly character with cocks who actually matter can do things. In a pinch, she also serves as a handy damsel in distress. If you're like me, plodding your way through this mess of a game in vain hope that Kat will realize what a couple of misogynist, patriarchal pieces of human trash she's spent this game with, allow me to spoil her grand conclusion: she spends the final boss battle cowering behind a trash can.

Surely there are other, better examples of women in this game, though. Right?

Right?

Meet Lillith. She's one of the villain Mundus' whores. That is literally the only relevant detail about her in this game.

Boy, Dante sure spends a lot of this game menacing women with his coc- with guns, huh? Fortunately he doesn't carry entirely through with his posturing: that's left to Vergil, who shoots this defenseless pregnant woman twice. It's okay though, since she's ugly and thus worthless as a woman.

As for a third? Well, the only other named female character is Dante's mother, Eva. It should be noted that characters throughout the game refer to Dante as "the Son of Sparda", even an unlockable difficulty level and outfit use this lofty title. But what of Eva's hand in Dante's creation? Well, she's just a whore if the rest of the characters in the game are to be believed. Not even Dante disagrees with this statement. Are we beginning to notice a trend in this game yet in regards to women being nothing but whores?

As a whole, I find this game truly disgusting and would not recommend this to my girlfriends or any right thinking human being. And shame to those who hold this filth up as a new pinnacle of story telling in a patriarchal, white cishet dominated industry.

Yeah, I call hate troll. Kat's potrayed in a much more even light than, say, Kyrie(helpless Damsel) or Lady in DMC4(trashily dressed money monger who has Dante do her work for her)...or Trish in DMC1(backstabbing Femme Fatale). I'd say classic DMC is worse on the portray of woman, since at least DmC acknowledge that the twins would have been BONED without Kat. in classic, Dante is actually hindered half the time by them

I do not believe her point had anything to do with earlier games portrayal of women, and if anything you just helped prove her point.

Btw, this whole "misogyny" complain is bullcrap. What's the point of this thread anyway? Oh, how awful of a person Dante is, and how dare this game use tropes to give any value at all for the only female lead characther.

So sorry, but I really could care less if the game does not tries to make female characters more proeminent than male ones, the story is still quite enjoyable anyway, and Kat is a fitting character even if cliched.
Other than that, save yourself the trouble and go read a book.

Ummm, okay, where to begin.

We first meet our highly original white heterosexual male protagonist with an enormous red flag, as strippers clad in angel costume gyrate and dance for his amusement; before being lead back to his disgusting, trashy trailer for a threesome. !
It's supposed to show how much of a state his life is, how empty he is. Dante even says that's how he coped with his problems. He never remembered love, so he bought it. He gets drunk at the club, has a pointless, loveless screw with some hookers, wakes up with no idea what happened and a hangover.....he probably did that a lot before Kat came and woke him up to the truth. That's what she does she literally wakes him up by knocking on his door and then gives his life meaning. She's his guide in Limbo and in life. She makes an effort to change him a little and to make him care.
the game's leading lady as she is assaulted by our illustrious hero stepping out naked in broad daylight
He didn't assault her. The guy was hung over out of him mind and probably didn't have a clue he was naked. Plus Kat's reaction was more like 'meh'. If she felt upset by that, I'm sure she would have let him know. Besides, if you've seen the full naked game model of Dante, you'll know he doesn't have a penis. :P

backstory in which she explains how she was raped every night
Where did it say she was raped? Sure if you read between the lines, maybe, but even if she was, she didn't let it get to her. She said so herself that she killed him and she moved on from that event. While I don't agree with making rape a character developing tool, I'm not sure that was done with Kat.

As for Kat as a character, I like her. She's not as skantily dressed as say Lady(DMC4, 3 was fine) or Trish. She tries to pull her weight, helps out and is the reason Dante makes a connection with humans (his only connection for why he gives a damn, but that's a story for another day....>_< )

she spends the final boss battle cowering behind a trash can.
I doubt she could step in there and break up a fight between two of the most powerful beings ever. She's human, plus she cared for both of them, so there's that kind of conflict too. At least she talked Dante down from finishing Vergil for good.

No, she has to be flashing cleavage and some bare leg, in a childlike, vulnerable pose. How else would male gamers want to protect her if she weren't a dainty, sexy, defenseless little doll?
I don't see Kat like that at all. If that's all you can see about her character, then that says more about you. For me, you actually get to know her. She's got her problems, but she works through them and comes into her own. She does assist in a fight, and offers support for Dante by being his guide and helps them with the break in of Mundus' tower. Dante says without her they would have failed.

She wasn't limited by her being female, but by her being human. In a world full of demons, how else is she supposed to be? She fights back the only way she can which is with spells and psychic powers.

And Lilith, she was a Mundus cheerleader and deluded. She fooled herself to think Mundus would love her and give her power. And she wasn't shot because she was ugly, it was because of Mundus' heir. She chose to get herself into that position (literally) and paid the price. At least she had a go at fighting Dante, but it was to get Mundus to respect her.
She is what she is.
Honestly, I pity her in a way that she was stupid enough to think Mundus would love her for that or share his power with her. Though I do get the feeling she was trying to trick him by pretending to like him....it's not like men and women in real life don't act like her and think 'if I do this, then this person will love me'. I wasn't expecting anything else deeper from Lilith, but I liked what I got.

Eva is given more character in the DLC. She's not a whore. The only ones who call her that are the demons and that's because they hate her so much for her taking Sparda away from them and then having children with him that are the most powerful beings capable of killing a demon king. Dante and Vergil are so powerful because they have not just Sparda in them, but also Eva. Eva's angelic blood holds back their demon side and as Eva said herself she gave them love and taught them to use their power for good, to protect mankind.

(It's almost like someone just noticed a lot of today's entertainment is still created by men with the male psyche in mind... >_>)

But misogynist? No more so than modern society already is? They wouldn't get away with anything blatantly and openly woman-hating these days. This is the age where people are just itching and waiting to be offended at something, after all. I agree there's a misogynist undercurrent in most societies, such as a woman's looks. If she's ugly (or old) she's taken off the air for example.

My dominant white male master race penis does not feel threatened by this thread at all.

By all means carry on though, i have no intention of further posting in a thread this hilariously troll-esque in nature but that doesn't mean that your efforts will fail to bring amusement to me.

I do not believe her point had anything to do with earlier games portrayal of women, and if anything you just helped prove her point.

...No, she did state that teh earlier games were bad, then proceeded to blast the new one and said it was "worse", when it is infact not. Kat is given much more positive portayal as a lead female in the story than the given examples from the JAPANESE written games. The OP also inserted symbolism into the game that wasn't even there...and extrapolated things that were not even IMPLICATED in the story.

And for the record, nowhere did they ever say Kat was "raped", that's an assumed conclusion some players made. All they said was, and in a calm fashion no less, was that she was attacked, sounded more like beatings than rape.

You might need to watch any new TV show or any anime or go to any highschool now a days and you will see what they did to women in this game makes them look 10x better than how they are portrayed or how they even show themselves anywhere else. Nothing was done to make them look bad in this game.

You do know that as a game, it's messages aren't exactly profound or life changing, and that people with the ability to separate reality and fiction will know that the standards followed in a story don't exactly dictate how they see everyday life, you judge people that like a certain story as impresionable children who take its values to heart, a little condescending on your part. Stories have cliches, especially video game stories and if you take every little cliche as a serious reflection on the state of our society, then I have some advice for you, go outside, read a book or just learn how to live with things. Your post reeks with the misplaced idealism of a bored student, when you grow up, you'll see that men and women, at least the ones I've seen, don't identify that much with the divide you are setting up, you talk about inequality, yet you try your hardest to set up this divide between the sexes, do some growing up before you pass yourself off as some righteous savior.

If there's a (major) female character in it who has some sort of positive influence on the situation or the hero, is pivotal to the plot, is positively portrayed and not utterly helpless and dependent on the man, has some powers of her own, etc. I would think that makes up for any 'nasty' female portrayals in a sense. Kat is a main character, does have her own abilities, has your typical popular type of 'strong woman' personality, influences the hero and is pivotal to the twist. Dante doesn't treat her like ****, either. Can't say this game is misogynist in terms of Kat's portrayal. Or that it just wipes the floor with the female demons, either, because one of those is given a sympathetic slant.

It won't pass the Bechdel test, but not much does in this mostly male-oriented world of entertainment, does it?

And you're supposed to HATE Vergil for what he does to that lead female demon, not cheer him on. Even Dante is horrifed...because he gave his word.

Do you feel that the positive representation of women in entertainment doesn't matter?
Have you seen the amout of sitcomes these days that portray men as useless fathers, bumbling fools, pitiful when begging for sex and generally not needed?

Or try playing the portal games. What happens when a Glados is in charge...she kills them all with neurotoxin and spends the rest of her time pyschologically and pysically abusing a woman for the point of testing. Then there's portal 2 showing how when a male is in charge, he becomes addicted to the pleasure chemicals to the point of making the same test over and over to get a hit while Glados breaks free and kills everyone because she would rather test without the pleasure chemicals getting in the way. So I guess you could take from that men= sex addicts?>_<

Is your belief in male supremacy feeling threatened?
Men only have supremacy if you think they do. Women can choose a career path that does not include 'housewife', live on their own, not have to get married, outperforming male children in school, getting the majority of degrees....you get the idea. There's even talk of not needing men for reproduction now that sperm can be made in a lab. And it is true that for humans as a species to continue, all you'd need is a few guys to jack off into a cup and freeze it....then kill all the guys. Happy now?

god forbid you played the old devil may cry games if you think that kat, the tiniest, small breasted, petite young adult is sexist, seriously, its 2013, if you get riled up by a women specially in things that usually involve sneaking around as in she has to be able to move freely, then you seriously have some problems lady -_- please leave this forum and get out while you're ever so slightly ahead of being the most hated new member

Nah I agree with the topic maker that how entertainment portrays people is important. It often doesn't occur to people they can do something (or don't have to do something) until they see it in popular media. Which is why they expect celebrities to be good role models and not bad ones. Or why there's a big deal made over racism in it, etc. Because pop culture and entertainment is a part of the modern educational process, whether we like it or not.

But I don't think DmC (or DMC in general) is particularly misogynist. Male centric definitely, but not woman-hating.

I am glad someone brought this up, although it'd be nice if it was in DMC General so we can take a look at the franchise as a whole instead of picking on DmC. The gender politics behind this brave new imagining of the franchise are pretty suspect, and I'm happy to talk about it. I just wish that the person starting the discussion wasn't some tit trying to parody Patricia Hernandez's writing. Seriously dude, the woman basically parodies herself, she doesn't need help.

Yeah, I call hate troll. Kat's potrayed in a much more even light than, say, Kyrie(helpless Damsel) or Lady in DMC4(trashily dressed money monger who has Dante do her work for her)...or Trish in DMC1(backstabbing Femme Fatale). Glad to see you're contributing the good old fashioned "Classic DMC was bad too!" rhetoric DR. Keep it coming.

Not a single POC appears at any point in the game, but that's a whole other kettle of fish; for now I wish to focus specifically on The Devil May Cry's portrayal of women.

If "POC" in this case is referring to Person Of Colour, then I think most would agree that Phineas would count. I imagine his actor, Lou Beatty Jr, would agree too.

lou2-253x355.jpg

It's true however that the Reality depicted in the game is unnervingly white washed, and that Mr Beatty's character is quite literally a Magical Negro caricature.

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MagicalNegro

At least Lou has some decent acting chops, and that redeemed his brief role for me.

Now I do find this objectification entirely disgusting and obnoxious, but wrong to say it's motivated by some nebulous patriarchal agenda. The depiction of New Dante as some kind of vapid Lothario is nothing but a shallow attempt to make him seem potent just as you say, to impress the viewer in the most shallow way possible. It's not sexuality as characterisation, rather posturing. NT is swinging for the low seats and offending everyone else, women and men equally.

Don't forget that the game's title is literally ejaculated on to the screen at the end of the sequence. Dante bukkakes you as a way of saying "Hello".

1521942-dmc_title_logo_copy-640x300.jpg

There's no spraying sound effect. It's spooge.

This same tattoo will later cast a magical spell summoning a real "sword", on top of our "hero" acquiring a pair of pistols to round out his arsenal of mighty cock stand-ins.

0/10, obviously the pistols are symbolic testicles sitting astride Rebellion's phallus. Apply yourself.

I do find this an amusing element in NT's ongoing hypocrisy when it comes to their female characters.

Very fine words from the man who made this:

Enslaved_sexy_Robot_Trip.jpg

The problematic elements of this character ramp up over time; she even comes complete with the standard Strong Female Character™ backstory in which she explains how she was raped every night until a big, powerful man came to her rescue.

Well actually she killed her tormentor herself...although we never get the chance to see her do anything as empowering in the game itself. More "Tell, Don't Show" storytelling from the master wordsmith himself.

The fact that all the heroes are handsome and the villains are all disgustingly ugly is another one of the elements that often pops up in NT's games. The only non-traditionally handsome friendly character in DmC would be Phineas.

Though I and the missus are very happy proponents of Gender Equality in most things, games included, I have to shake my head at certain ideas that roll around when the Evil Patriarchy is discussed. I do get a laugh when people continuously describe swords as "phallic" symbols like it's unacceptable brainwashing. Speaking as a dude who has forged and attempted to use weapons shaped like vaginas, I can attest that they simply aren't aerodynamic enough to be effective.

You know what the funny thing is though? Devil May Cry 2 is probably the most gender equal game in the franchise. You fight as a woman who is equally capable as the hero for most of the game, and it even passes the Bechdel Test!

Anyway, it's been my Privilege.
