Legitimate question about the ending [Mild Spoilers?]

I thought the ending was the perfect way to end the game, actually. To me, it was exactly like DMC3's ending except with a little more oomph to it because Vergil and Dante's relationship felt more real and compelling, and instead of Lady, there's Kat.
The white hair actually makes sense if you think about it. At the end, Dante stabs Vergil in the chest (a reference to DMC3's first battle with Vergil, I think) while in full on demon badass mode for a prolonged amount of time (canonically, mind you). All of that rage and stress going through him, plus the fact that he was on DT for so long probably unlocked the demon energy in him. And you should know how his skin also turned pale--not white and fine, but pale and ghastly.

I keep seeing people complain about how Spards DIDN'T take Mundus down previous to teh game or was more powerful that someone acknowledge to be a demonic god in this incarnation of the series. Honest, this was a MAJOR hole in the plot in the classic series, since they never explained HOW Sparda took on the entire demon world ON HIS OWN, or why HE was not the ruler if he was that powerful. They have down the assumed levels of power to give more dramatic weight to the story, and honestly, it allows for more story to be played with when these guys are not nigh-invinicble forces of nature.

I think the ending was probably the best in the series so far. It does not tie things up nicely or give a lot of closure or resolution but I think that is actually very brave of NT and very strong. Everything goes to hell. I mean the whole world along with Vergil and Dante's brotherhood. And Dante is left not even knowing who he really is anymore, only that he has to protect mankind.

I know some may consider Vergil wanting to rule the world random but it was foreshadowed a lot. He shows little care for Kat, or any other humans throughout the game and the only person who matters to him is Dante. Even Phineus gives us a hint of the conflict when he ask who would rule in Munds's place.I think he is truly shocked that his brother would not join him just like he was truly shocked when they met and Dante didn't care about his cause or anything.

Vergil is smart but cant see past his own ideas and ambitions. It never dawned on him that Dante being a super being like him would ever sympathize that much with humanity. In Vergil's mind he honestly believes that humans are too weak to take care of themselves and believes that he can guide them and would be a good overlord but cant see that he would end up just like Mundus no matter how great his intentions are because of the simple fact that he has no real empathy for mankind.

As for Dante being cruel, He is not in his right mind in DT mode, he cant really control it which is why Limbo freaks out once he enters it. It's almost like a pre DMC3 ending really even though this is an alternate universe becuae at the start of DMC3 we have no idea why Vergil and Dante hate each other and this gives us a lot of insight as two why they cant see eye to eye.

One thing I don't get... Why Vergil is suddenly able to make an portal into the demon world with his Yamato?

That's a great question lol. I am not really sure, perhaps it's one of Yamato's powers, we have never gotten a real explanation of that weapon and what it could do. Well except for DMC4 where it could close the hell gates. Maybe it can open them too. Maybe the Vergil's Downfall dlc will shed some light on some of that stuff.

Who said it was a portal to the demon world...? It's a portal at least.

Could have taken him someplace else, not necessarily the demon world :p Then again, the Yamato is a key to Hell Gates. Maybe Vergil actually took power from it when he closed it :p

It was never a plot hole, you were supposed to play the games and find out what Sparda did to save the world, in order to show what made him a legend in the first place. And by keeping some things a secret, it also allows him to have that aura of mysteriousness which made him seem great. That was the whole premise of the story, and what drives it forward. It was to show how Dante grows to live up to Sparda's reputation, and eventually surpass him. He was made to be a god and a ruler to give you a clear idea how much more powerful Dante could become. Sparda reached his full potential by embracing humanity, and the Dante in that series was half-human.
