My favourite DMC games in order would be:

1. Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition
2. Devil May Cry 4
3. Devil May Cry: Dante's Awakening (because Vergil isn't playable in this version)
4. Devil May Cry
5. Devil May Cry 2

Best one IMO is DMC 3 SE; DMC 4 is about the same - though storyline is so-so, the instant style-switching is unbeatable (suits Dante's persona best). Least is DMC 1 - story is better than 4, and so is the gothic atmosphere; but since I am too used to the control in 3 & 4, it's rather impossible for me now to play 1...

No comment on 2 - haven't attempted it yet...
