^ Censoring opinions you don't personally like is not how freedom is supposed to work. But it looks like you're about to get your wish - if you live in the UK anyway.

David Cameron appears to be asking a company (Huawei) that routinely filters and censors the Chinese internet (for political purposes it mainly appears) to do similar for us in the UK, and will decide what we can and cannot see by default under the new proposed censorship laws. Hooray! I always wanted to live in a fascist state.

Not only that but it appears Huawei has been in bed with British Telecom / Talk Talk for quite some time already. Big business relationships/plutocracies trump "freedom" I suppose.

I Knew this post was coming,i have no qualms with freedom of speech&expression without that i can't even express my own opinions.

I just don't think "Freedom of hate speech" is justifiable in anyway, you can easily get away with "I hate this game" or "I hate this abc celebrity" but you just can't get away with "I hate this skin color" or "I hate this ethnic subgroup" at least not when you are actually the one writing the blog/article.

Well that's never going to happen something quite similar happened in my country too, where hackers screwed over FBI&Govt websites and stupid govt actually went out and said "Internet needs moderation" because of national security concerns blah blah never really came up with anything.

Most of the other ISP's which doesn't come under govt mostly doesn't give 2 craps about censorship.

I don't like racist or sexist opinions either but I still respect a person's entitlement to believe what they want, however pathetic it may be, or however irritating it may be to me. You don't have to look at their blog or website because it isn't being shoved in your face or infringing YOUR entitlements. If they came to your door and started picketing their opinions in your face then yes, I think they should be stopped. But otherwise, they should have their say because I would not want to be in a position myself where someone told me I could not have MY say, simply because they do not like what I am saying.

It's easy to be complacent about internet freedoms, but our government will use any retaliations (which it will call "cyber terrorism" probably) to its advantage and we're generally such an unperturbed nation we can and do put up with almost anything from them. We've already lost many freedoms and our government already snoops on us. They've already slanted this law like a lawyer would, so that anyone opposing it would automatically be asked "so you think children should be able to see adult material? So you think pedophiles should be allowed to continue doing what they do? So you think rape porn is good?" etc. which would obviously reflect badly on the person advocating an unfettered internet.

I simply don't have faith in the idea that freedom will prevail without fighting to maintain it. Look at China and NK. They exist and they don't believe in it at all. Shrugging shoulders and saying "that'll never happen" is asking it to happen because governments always want more control. And right now they're eyeing up the internet as the best thing that ever happened to them, something that, if under their control could give them more information about what their citizens are doing than they could dream of, could provide a means for them to censor out what they don't want people to see, and a means to pipe in what they DO want people to see. If controlled, the internet would be the ULTIMATE spying and propaganda tool.

I'm hoping for a U-turn on this ridiculous porn block web censorship thing, but it's only going to happen if there's a public backlash and the implementation is shown up to be worse than useless. Otherwise these fools in power (and they do appear to be stupid, because they don't seem to know how the internet actually functions) are going to continue to think they can do as they please with it. Because it won't be just porn they'll be blocking, I'd guarantee.

^^I know that that's why i think internet's freedom is a double edged sword one side you have this stuff and one side you have some productive stuff.

Its still curious for me that internet has also become a platform for such inane stuff,i guess its just like how they say you can't have the good without the bad.
