Game development editors/tools

Been something I have been meaning to get back into for years and should have continued on this path many years ago instead of wasting the last 11 years in a dead end career that I do not enjoy. Not that I think im going to become a games designer for a living (everyones pipe dream) but would be nice to start learning some new skills so I can get foot in the door of the industry somewhere (anywhere) doing something that interests me.

I am just curious if anyone has used any game development software/editors and if anyone can recommend any good free ones for beginners or any good sites with some tutorials/tips etc. I have just download Unity after it was highly recommended and I plan to follow some tutorials from the website to get a better understanding of it.

They literally posted that as I was researching the very subject, one of the reasons I decided to download Unity straight away. Couldnt have come at a better time. :lol:
