I got to go with mrrandomlulz on this one.

Dante and DmC Dante aren't much alike other than name and slightly similar in terms of their origins.

The old Dante went through mood swings about every game, so I'm just going to talk about his incarnation on the first game.

Appearance:

Obviously they look different. DMC Dante prefers a full red jumpsuit with a red overcoat.
DmC Dante settles with a white shirt, black and red hoodie, and black jeans.

Personality:

DMC Dante has a very sarcastic attitude, being able to laugh at threatening foes and knows how to push their buttons. He tries to stay "stylish" during combat, like his suave attitude. But he has shown that in the right circumstances, he can be serious. He also shows a dislike to the demons he combats, seeing how they have previously tormented his family.
DmC Dante tends to be crude and has a darker look on life. Being tortured by demons at a young age and having no parents, he acts almost insecure. He curses, gets into many fights, and has a hatred towards demons.

Style:
The previous Dante had a major prowess in combat, being a professional at swordsmanship and a marksman with his pistols Ebony & Ivory. He knows almost how to wield any weapon he comes across. He also tries to look his best during combat, showing a great "stylish" skill.

DmC Dante has a similar fighting style, but can use more radically different weapon. He has no difficulty going from a light scythe to a heavy war axe. He also shows skill with his pistols, confirmed to be the rebooted Ebony & Ivory.
His sword, Rebellion, he shows critical skills with, even showing professionalism with it's metallic whip.
But he prefers blunt force over style, dismembering his enemies and showing other ways of violently killing them.

These people are radically different as you can see. But that's not a bad thing at all, since we don't know how DmC Dante will develop through the story.

The reason DmC Dante is named Dante, and has similarities with DMC Dante is because it's good for marketing.
