Nightfall of The Return trilogy by L.J. Smith. Even though I swore I wouldn't read it, much less buy it, because the first 8 chapters were 'meh' way back when it first got published. It still kinda is 'meh' because the characters all seem OOC, and gosh darn it if one of them has to jump on a computer one more time I'm going to throw this book across the room.
But I'm reading it and dreading Caroline is going to try drag me under the bed, or Isobel is going to appear right behind me and flick her forked tongue in my face *faints with Bonnie*...but Damn....oooooh Damon. Good merciful angels! That scene with the dust devils and the trees and Elena and Matt and Damon in the woods the first time...*swoons* the visuals...they are GORGEOUS...*drools*
It's for the more mature audience, which is suitable because most of VD's fans have grown up since 10 years ago. There's a lot more...yeah...erm...but the horror. Gosh, the horror is overloaded. I  it. I was seriously worried I wasn't going to be able to sleep last night >.<
