Yes, I've read that. But that doesn't prove what fans what. That is just another statement from another person, a journalist. If you can provide info on how the Megaman fanbase reacted, then that would be a good source of proof.

Comments shown below the article. And from what I can see there, it shows some mixed feelings and opinions, but there are indeed some more positive comments amongst them from people who seem to have wanted something like this. Like these comments:

Dammit! I would’ve gotten that just for the cutscene attacks alone!

The way I see it, Mega Man DOES have potential to be darker and more mature. I would like to see a darker and more realistic version of Mega Man X; it can work, and for many reasons
1. The X series does have a much more serious tone than the original games
2. The gameplay style has massive potential and it can make for some interesting, fun, and awesome mechanics.
3. Capcom needs SOME way to bring Mega Man back fresh and new, and taking a route like this, while a big risk, could bring Mega Man back
To be fair, this is beta footage for a game that was canned within a matter of months, but it still looks like it had potential to be a great, dark, and more adult Mega Man game.

Jesus.
Sweet.
Looks like if platinum games made a FPS. If the character design was a bit more Mega Man-esque it could’ve rocked, seriously.
So when you say "the fans don't want this" you are generalizing, trying to speak on behalf of a whole fanbase... and you would also be wrong about it. Sure, some fans don't want this, but there are also fans who do think it has potential.
